Watching: Braving conditions not accustomed to Naples, the home support inside the San Paolo were confident Napoli would overcome Catania.
Neapolitan belief in their side is based on the team’s no nonsense approach. After all there is no point hanging around when there are games to be won.
A focused determination that has seen the Azzurri emerge as rivals to Juventus for the Serie A crown and make a mockery of the statistics.
The Sicilians were played off the park. Strange considering Walter Mazzarri’s team were lagging in 13th-place for territorial supremacy – on a par with Atalanta.
Running an extra risk is acceptable when your goalkeeper … and star striker … are capable of such quick-thinking.
The second-placed team had also completed the same percentage of successful passes as 11th-placed Torino. But why be conventional, when it is better to spring a surprise?
Napoli trail weekend opponents Lazio in almost all categories, including ball possession. Where they do not trail Lazio is in the table.
The Biancocelesti have been struck a double-double blow: two consecutive defeats and the loss to injury of both Hernanes and Miroslav Klose.
Some hope can be found from last season’s meeting at the Olimpico. Lazio faced the second half without either of their star players – and still went on to win 3-1.
And with Klose’s replacement, Sergio Floccari, showing he can rise to the occasion, the Biancocelesti support need not feel such a sense of trepidation before the arrival of those unconventional Neapolitans.
