England never won anything anyways !
David Villa - When taking a touch past the keeper: just finesse it into the net! You don't have to drive it home at 100kph! He could have even passed it into the net... And when he took the volley (i don't remember exactly what minute) and it hit the post, he could have easily touched it to the left (with the skill that he possseses, and slotted it into the near corner. The volley was beautiful, don't get me wrong, but he definately could have done much better there to put the Spanish at a draw.
Fabregas - As before, take a small touch, and slot it past the keeper..especially in the late stages of the game. When he receives a ball from David Villa on the left (correct me if i'm wrong) and has a BEAUTIFUL touch to the opposite corner..but just wide...he could have easly taken a settling touch, or TRAPPING the ball, as we all learned in toddler years, and passed it by the keeper,he could have again, put points on the board.
The Spanish dominated almost all aspects of the game. But they tried too hard to make the highlight clips of the week, and did not focus enough on actually winning the game. As for the English goal, yes that was luck, and not so well deserved (and you can tell they know that in their celebration; if I had been the team to get a 1-nil lead against Spain I would be in the stands), but they were in the right place, at the right time, and that's what football is all about.
And as for this being a match that Spain doesn't care so much about..You can strike that idea. The Spanish wanted a win, and you could see it on their faces after the final whistle blew. But they only ruined it for themselves, with their lack of attention to simple finishing.
honestly both are excellent candidates.
i hope both alba and enrique are enlisted in the final team for euro next year.
first of all, England won the match, it's a very good win to boost their confidence especially the young boys that Capello fielded. congratulations England. but to be over the moon just by this result, you are wrong. Because the way England won this match is just too unconvincing.
Let's focus on England. Just look the way England played that night. For the first half, 10 men were inside their own half, and most of the time they defend deep in the box. No dangerous attack from England except that long shot from Lampard. In the second half, they got extremely lucky for a free kick to be successfully headed and it rebound off the post and bounce perfectly in front of the goal for Lampard (who was destined to be there) to put it easily into the open goal . And that was in the 49th minute. For the next 40 minutes, England continue their hardcore defending with some hopes of counterattacking in shape of Wellbeck and Adam Johnson.
Spain turned up with their trademark style. Possession, passing, clever movements, crazy passings, and at times over elaborate. In the first half it was like watching a training session. In the second half, they got unlucky by the goal and it made the job harder for them as logically England will defend deeper and harder in order to conserve the lead. If you watch close enough, you'll see that Spain tried to change their way of playing by becoming more direct (mostly done by Fabregas-Mata) and launching long crosses from the middle (by Alonso). But the main problem remained in the penalty box- 8 to 10 men defending the goal. It's just getting harder and harder for them to penetrate. They did had their chances, Villa and Fabregas waste them all.
Overall, it was a bad day for Spain. They didn't performed as the way they used to perform in real tournaments. They controlled the game, owned the ball for almost 95% of the game but they lack the extra cutting edge they frequently produced before. Yes they lost some friendlies before (argentina, portugal and italy) but I believed the motivation factor for each side was crucial in those games (including this game).
For England, be alert. You won against the best international team by playing cautious-defending-negative football and the goal was a rebounded ball from a set piece header. Let say in the next Euro England are to face Netherland, Germany and Spain to win the competition. You can't expect to perform like this for each game and hopefully in every game there will be 1 goal from 4,5 set pieces that you get and then defend like mad. Oh yes, in previous friendlies Italy- Argentina- Portugal all beat Spain comprehensively, by playing attacking game.
The problem that plagued Spain remain there to be seen- (though this is not very often) the inability to unlock team that play 10 men in the box. Just look at the Spain-Switzerland, USA-Spain and this match. Hopefully Del Bosque can find a way to solve this problem. For England, i think it is consistency (i didn't follow all England's matches, just some of them only). At times they play ok, at times they play really bad. Just a shame that the country with the most popular league in the world can't match up with other big guns in international stages.
2. we dont play like that against every team, only spain because thats the only way we could play due to player shortage.
3. Spain did hae possession but most of the time it was passing sideway and backwards. Having the ball does not imply you are attacking. Spain were negative in the sense that they didnt take risks with their passing because of fears of pacy england counter attack. So it was basically keep ball for them.
4. Not many england fans are getting over-excited. Keeping a clean sheet against spain is hard to do we are giving credit where its due. We know we may not win euro 2012, there are 4 or so teams better than us.
