i've just started following the norwegian league and i've noticed most stadia have synthetic turf. i'm guessing this is because of the harsh winters is this correct?
That is correct. As far as I know, 6 of the 16 clubs in the Norwegian premiership play their matches on synthetic turf, especially those located in the northern region of Norway, where it is colder and more snow.

It is an ongoing debate in Norway, whether synthetic turf is good or bad, as this kind of turf leads to a lot more injuries than original grass. Some teams (like Rosenborg for example) actually get original quality grass overseas.

All teams in the Norwegian premiership have synthetic turf on their training ground in addition to original grass, as it makes it possible to train in the winter as well. These turfs often have heat elements beneath them making the snow melt if necessary.
