Real Madrid and Bayern rewarded with late Champions League winners
Stephen Wood - 2 years ago

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich made it two wins from two in the Champions League with late victories tonight, as Milan faltered at Martin Jol's Ajax.

The Argentina forward Angel Di María scored Real's winner at Auxerre in the 81st minute, seven minutes after he had been introduced as a substitute by José Mourinho, the Real coach.

The Bayern midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger scored twice, including the winner in the 89th minute, to lead the Bundesliga club to a 2-1 victory at Basle. Schweinsteiger's second-half penalty had earlier cancelled out Alex Frei's opener for the Swiss.

Real's chief rivals in Group G, Milan, had to come from behind to salvage a point in a 1-1 draw at Ajax, a result that left Real clear at the top of the group with six points.

Mounir El Hamdaoui, the Morocco striker, put Ajax in front after 23 minutes, only for Zlatan Ibrahimovic to equalise against his former club eight minutes before half-time for Milan, who beat Auxerre in their opening fixture.

In Bayern's Group E, Roma ignited their campaign with a 2-1 victory over CFR Cluj at the Stadio Olimpico.

The defender Philippe Mexès and the substitute Marco Borriello scored in the 69th and 71st minutes respectively, and Roma held on after the Romanian side had threatened a comeback via Ionut Rada's 78th minute goal.

Spartak Moscow kept pace with Chelsea in Group F, the Russian club beating Zilina, of Slovakia, 3-0 with two goals from the Brazilian Ari and one from his compatriot Ibson.

Chelsea and Spartak lead the group with six points each.

Arsenal share top spot on maximum points in their group with Shakhtar Donetsk. The Ukrainian side beat Braga 3-0 in Portugal, the Brazilian Luiz Adriano scoring twice.
