Bulgaria's coach, Stanimir Stoilov, announced his resignation after their 1-0 home defeat by Montenegro, who join England on maximum points at the top of Group G after two matches.
"I wanted the team to get to the finals but it's obvious that after two defeats, one at home, it's going to be very difficult," Stoilov said. "I've already informed the team and Bulgarian Football Union president [Borislav Mihaylov] of my decision."
Bulgaria were beaten 4-0 by England at Wembley on Friday and lost again tonight to a goal by Elsad Zverotic, whose thunderous shot from outside the penalty area after 35 minutes won the game. Montenegro beat Wales 1-0 in their opening qualifier on Friday and next month play at home to Switzerland before travelling to face England on 12 October.
France responded to their shock home defeat by Belarus last Friday by winning in Bosnia-Herzegovina tonight. Karim Benzema and Florent Malouda scored in the last 20 minutes to secure victory for Lauren Blanc's team in Group D, which is led by Albania after their 1-0 win over Luxembourg. A miserable start to qualifying for Portugal continued with a 1-0 defeat in Norway. That follows a draw at home to Cyprus.
