World Cup 2010: Australia fans accused of throwing bottles on to pitch
Dave Middleton - 2 years ago

Fifa is to look into reports that plastic bottles were thrown on to the pitch during Australia's World Cup Group D match against Ghana.

Socceroos supporters are reported to have thrown the bottles on to the field at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg as the sides drew 1-1 yesterday. It is understood that none of the bottles struck players, and landed on the athletics track around the pitch.

The Fifa spokesman Nicolas Maingot said: "The issue here is safety. Bottles must not be thrown and in this case we will look at it."

Football Federation Australia spokesman Rod Allen said: "We don't condone that sort of behaviour no matter how frustrating a match has become. Our fans usually are very good, they travel round the world but if somebody threw something then we absolutely do not condone that sort of behaviour at any stage."

Meanwhile, Fifa confirmed that the Australia forward Harry Kewell will be suspended for only one match following his red card for handball against Ghana. It means he will miss the final Group D game against Serbia but would be available for the last 16 should Australia progress.
