Xavi retires from international football

It's the end of an era.

Spanish midfielder Xavi announced his retirement from international football on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old won 133 caps for La Roja, helping his country win the 2010 FIFA World Cup along with back-to-back European Championships.

"I've taken the decision to leave the national team. My time there has finished," he said in an official press release.

"From now on I'm another fan of the Spain team. I'm grateful to everybody at the Federation (RFEF), it's been a marvelous time for me to be there for so many years and have so much success. I'm leaving very proud and I wish them all the best."

The Barcelona star was named player of the tournament at EURO 2008, forming the nucleus of a daunting midfield alongside Andres Iniesta that would carry Spain to international domination in three consecutive tournaments.
ahh dang.. Its proven that David Villa has always has been The Man upfront for La Furia Roja

well...i guess its too late until u realized it, Mr Del Bosque
^ Cannot agree more. I'd play them strikers in the following order:

David Villa
Negredo/Llorente
Torres
Costa

The fact that Costa never played for Spain earlier and all the others did was enough proof that Del Bosque should had utilized the others. Ohh well.
+1
yes. And sure, ppl can debate that Costa having a better season than Villa(not by a large margin though)..but its the aspect of who can "work" with the team and who can't

Spain is nothing like Atletico

the one i can think of is Nicklas Bendtner. How average he is with any of his clubs, he would ALWAYS be Denmark 1st choice striker

the same can be said with David Villa. Comparing his national team experience and how he can 'click' with the current Spanish squad is a no-contest the 'newcomer' Diego Costa
Wouldn't it have been poetic if Torres's goal was the final goal of the Spain Australia game, after all it was his goal that began the Spanish reign, it would'v been fitting if his goal ended that Spanish reign.
The legendary old guard of Spain are done, not Spanish football. In the past three years, neither Barcelona nor Spain have played tiki-taka the way it should be played: with one touch passing, smart runs and energetic pressing. It was just pass, pass sideways some more, give it to a winger, cross and hope for the best. That's far from the amazing tiki-taka that won Barça and Spain all those trophies.

I wonder what's next now. The pressing game with fast counterattacks dominates now, what's the next step?
Nailed it jeoren , its pretty hilarious to read comments like ' Tiki taka ' is dead when neither Spain nor Barcelona managed to play or enforce tiki taka the way it was suppose to be .

As for Spain's future i think we do have another pool of amazing talent all what is required is few personals that will help them achieve their potential
Spains future is still bright, just look at thiago alcantara, Isco, Jese... they'll bounce back
And the reason they havent managed to play it the way it should is because teams have figured it out how to play against it...
^Whenever Barca/Spain lose people say that others have figured out how to play against them. No matter how they played, whether it was defending deep and lobbing long passes behind the defense or high pressing game or being physical or... So suddenly several styles have become effective against tiki taka, as if these styles had never been tried against Spain/Barca before they got "figured out"??

For example, other teams have always defended very deep and conceded possession to tiki taka teams and attacked on the counter, but some years ago it didn't work as well as it does today.

The decline of Barca/Spain is mostly caused by these teams not playing as well as they used to, no matter how the other team plays.
A few years back Spain looked invincible, seemed to have found how to perfect football, Barca as well. But in the end Football moves on and all generations die eventually. The last real Tiki Taka esc performance you can say Spain really had was the first half of that Euro 2012 final where they destroyed Italy.

More youth, fresh ideas, new game-plan and slowly ridding themselves of the old guard is the next step. It was great entertainment watching Spain in their pomp and transforming from the greatest footballing nation to never win a World Cup to dominating World Football.

On a side note: they badly missed Puyol
They're not playing as well because teams have figured it out bro its not hard to understand lol...if teams went all out attack then barca would win...see the el classico
Spain during their Euro 2008 triumph, that was entertaining and magnificent side

Spain during the 2010 World Cup triumph...the most boring team ever to won the trophy
^ to be fair, that whole World Cup was boring
^couldn't agree more

yeah all u vuvuzela-blowing ppl...i blame u

XD
not one Spain fan on this board for discussion. Really saddens me

well, i don't mind being the #12795 as long as i can keep this thread alive..

..and don't call me a gloryhunter either. I joined em just AFTER they're out of world cup :D

RIP tik-taka. The whole world knows how to counter that style of play. Congrats Chile
Ah, no more over cocky Spain fans :)

Should have gone to Brazil, Costa.
If Spain loses to Australia then del Bosque will get sacked.
Del Bosque is most likely going to resign anyway. I feel for that man, he's a gentleman, but brought far too little innovation in a jaded and aging team.

No more cocky Spain fans? Yea ok like we didn't just make you watch and sufer over the past 6 years...stfu.
@Evexo
Your tears are delicious.
Spain is still producing the best, they just took the wrong team to Brazil.
Well I blame VDB! He clearly should have taken Isco & Carvajal with him to Brazil. Buskets, Alonso, Xavi, Inesta are all over used and old. Picking players because of their name while the right choice is on the bench or at home. Casillas shouldn't have started the 2nd match and why he continued to choose an unfit none Spaniard Costa over Negredo/Villa/Torres is beyond me. No wonder the whole team played like s**t, if it wasn't enough to have the pressure of defending the cup, they also had the whole stadium booing them every time their striker touched the ball.

the end of a golden era.
+3
End of Xavi and Iniesta, one of the most amazing midfield partnership in football history!
+1
totally agree, it was very delightful to see them playing high quality football like between 2008 and 2012.
BYE BYE SPAIN :D
