Montpellier! I was so happy, posting all over the Montpellier page.... I feel like I'm the only person who ever goes there.

My summer's been fun so far. I'm off to do some research in a week's time, then I'll be back to start a summer job, so that's less fun. My friends and I are thinking about shelling out $200 for Firefly 3-day passes in July though. The line-up looks pretty good. And the weekend after that I'm seeing Liverpool v. Spurs in Baltimore!

Second, if I say Americans are that, Iranians are this, it's not racist. Putting people into categories based on groups they are a part of is called stereotype.

Exactly -- racism doesn't apply to where you come from. Racism is about what and who you are. So calling someone "ignorant American" who is actually from America and doesn't understand the difference between soccer and football is not racist. But if a person understands the difference and still chooses to use soccer, then that person is being an unreasonable ignorant!


And also, using ignorance as adjective to a group is not racist. A good example in American culture is "Asians can't drive". It's stereotype, not racism. In many cases it's true. It is opinion and yet fact.

At the same time you might be good at math. I call you an Asian. Again, it is my opinion, but also is a fact.


"You're from Iran. If I say anything negative to you on the basis that you're Iranian, that's racist. "

If you call me a terrorist because of my origin, you're not racist. You're generalizing me. You call me terrorist because Iranians are famous for being terrorists. They are also famous for being rich. And if you call me rich Iranian, it's still generalization, because I'm not!

There is a fine yet confusing line between stereotype, discrimination and racism. We just need to know what they mean.

I explained this in my first post.
How many Italians use Calcio when speaking on these forums? In Persian, we might call it "zoorkeshi" but when I speak to you I call it football, not because your native language is English, I do it so everybody undersands what I'm talking about and avoid being called "Ignorant Iranian"!

All I'm saying is this. When you are talking with your friends and neighbours at school or at a local pub use soccer. But if you go a Portugese or Italian pub never use that word! To an American football fan internet is always a Portugese pub!
