As you said the stats show that we concede far to many goals in set pieces. Though you should note that our conceding from open play is very low. Set pieces are very much a team affair so not just the fault of the centre backs. Wenger said that he believed this was down to lacking one or two tall players in the team.
I'd rather see money spent on a top defensive midfield who is good in the air, and a good wide player
1. I'm biased because I dislike his personality or his class. So feel free to ignore everything below.
2. If he takes an offensive squad (one of the BEST in the world), makes them play defensively, and they're obviously not designed for playing that way, then I question whether he can manage THE players HE HAS or he's just being successful using the same tactics over and over that require specific kinds of players. No one ever says "Guardiola is the best manager", because everyone knows he's just playing the system with players that are perfect for that. Guardiola might be the best manager for that kind of system, but not overall. Give Guardiola another squad and I bet he'd have trouble winning a match.
3. His past success is great (especially with Porto). And it should be respected (but since it's Mourinho, he won't be getting any from me). But look at what happened with van Gaal at Bayern Munich. He won league last year and was named Manager of the Year, and was released by the club this year! The point is: sometimes you're good, and sometimes you're not. And sometimes even if you're great in the past, the present can put those victories in perspective with any poor losses (amongst other things). In my opinion, his antics this year with Madrid have been beyond bad, with the idea that it's trying to cover up for his bad management this year.
Hopefully that makes some sense. Cheers
