Middlesbrough clinched a home FA Cup quarter-final with Manchester United after triumphing in a penalty shoot-out against West Brom at The Hawthorns. Albion's January signing Sherjill MacDonald missed the vital spot-kick in sudden death as Boro booked a place in the last eight for the second successive season.

Boca Junior’s Martin Palermo scored an absolute beauty of a goal from the halfway line ala David Beckham.
And to think that this guy is in the Guinness Book Of Records for “Most Penalties Missed In An International”, a feat he achieved in the 1999 Copa America when amazingly he missed three penalties during his team’s defeat by Colombia in the 1999 Copa America in Paraguay. His first shot hit the goalpost, the second landed in the stands, and the third one was saved.
You would have thought that the coach would have had him stop at two….
But he has in a way redeem himself with this cracker:
A Didier Drogba brace gave Chelsea a 2-1 win over Arsenal in an eventful Carling Cup final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Theo Walcott put Arsenal ahead but Drogba won a match which saw John Terry carried off with a serious head injury and three players sent off after a mass injury-time brawl.
The match was tarnished by the injury to Terry - which saw the England and Chelsea captain carried off unconscious in a neck brace and taken straight to hospital in Cardiff after Abou Diaby's boot caught him sickeningly in the face when he stooped to attack a corner on 56 minutes.
Emanuel Adebayor, Mikel John Obi and Kolo Toure were sent off for their part in a mass brawl during the lengthy injury time period, an incident which also should have seen Frank Lampard and Cesc Fabregas dismissed. Toure reacted angrily after a challenge with Obi which prompted most of the players on the pitch to pile in, Lampard and Fabregas grabbing each other's throats while Adebayor appeared to swing a punch at Wayne Bridge.
But, in addition to the fighting, the oft-maligned League Cup was blessed by a final which had all the drama of a classic - goals, controversial decisions, near-misses, and serious injury. Read the rest of this entry »
