Why Don't You?
We haven't done the actual maths behind this, but off the top of our heads, we'd say there's about a million awesome things you could do with the API.
Here'e just a few we've thought of, to kickstart your football fiddling:
BUILD a Massive Player/Manager Quote Archive
Use the player.getQuotes service to grab player quotes on matches, injuries and team performance. Link this to the player.getPhoto service to create some super pretty mash-ups. Use the news links returned by the quote service to link off to news articles and sources where the quote came from.
BUILD a Guardian Open Platform Trend Service
Snag an API key from the Guardian Open Platform and use the various openfooty OPG bridging url services to start logging Guardian Editorial popularity. Present this in real-time as new stories come in and create heat maps to highlight popular articles. Drill down further and allow users to filter this data by date, most read, or even supporter group interest and related team articles.
BUILD a Live Match Trend Service
Show, in real-time, trending matches by popularity using the match package. Order them by most popular, most exciting or goals of the week. Filter by country, league, and supporter popularity. Do this live, as the votes come in and use ajax to update trending matches on the fly. Fire the user off to related interviews, match reports and commentary from the Guardian. Embed videos, photos, blog posts and podcasts returned by the API.
BUILD an Injury Bulletin Board
Use the player and team packages to index the latest injuries in a given league or team. Why not integrate this into an iPhone app and use a push service to inform supporters of latest team changes? Heck, if you have Fergies phone number, why not have an in-built SMS messaging service that will let him know when Owen breaks his foot next?
BUILD your own fantasy league!
Use the various dreamfooty service calls to access our fantasy league data, and build your own fantasy football league. Or, if you're too lazy to do that, just give us a shout via the partners page and we'll discuss whitelabel opportunities with you.
BUILD a media alert service
Use the team and match packages to alert supporter groups when new videos get indexed by the footytube search bot. Expand on this further by using the league packages to aggregate latest news, images and podcasts. Plug this into an SMS alert system and integrate this content into a mobile phone framework. Combine this with Instapaper, so that users can come back later to catch up on the latest news and videos.
BUILD a footy viral archive
Use the videos package to create a collection of footy viral videos. Order them by most watched to create a mash-up of those that are generating most interest in the football community.
Phew!
That's quite enough for now, but we'll regularly update this page as more project ideas come in.
If you have any ideas of your own, or you need help in getting your idea off the ground, don't forget to let us know in the developer forum
