• Mexico striker subject of offers between £12m and £15m
• Louis van Gaal may decide to keep Danny Welbeck instead
• Di María: It was never my desire to leave Real Madrid
Juventus and Valencia have made offers to buy Javier Hernández from Manchester United. The Serie A champions are going head to head with the La Liga side to secure the services of the Mexico striker, who appears not to have a place in Louis van Gaal’s plans.
Both clubs have submitted bids, understood to be in the region of £12m to £15m, for Hernández, who earns about £85,000 a week at Old Trafford. Atlético Madrid are also interested in signing Hernández, who joined in 2010 from Guadalajara and has scored 59 goals in 152 appearances for the Reds over four seasons.
Hernández was ineffective against MK Dons on Tuesday night and has been told he is not part of Van Gaal’s plans at United. Any move, however, may have implications for the future of Danny Welbeck, who partnered Hernández up front in United’s humiliating 4-0 Capital One Cup defeat at MK Dons on Tuesday. The England forward has been told he can leave Old Trafford by Van Gaal, but the manager may now reverse that decision if he receives an acceptable bid for Hernández.
Van Gaal admits his squad could look very different after Monday’s transfer deadline, with moves for Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal and Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho the subject of much speculation.
Gaal said: “I cannot say anything about that because it raises the price. The club shall comment when the time is there to announce it. We cannot react on every rumour. Also players shall go in the meantime. I had a conversation after lunch with the players and I said maybe after this weekend we shall have another group because players shall go away and others shall come in.”
United have promoted the 18-year-old James Wilson to the first-team squad and Van Gaal is interested in trying out Adnan Januzaj up front at some point but he would be wary of losing two of his four frontline strikers, especially given the injury records of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie.
There has been speculation that Welbeck may move to Hull, with the forward thought to be priced around £20m, but it is understood that the Humberside club are not high on the player’s list of destinations. Tottenham and Arsenal are both interested in signing Welbeck but United are reluctant to sanction a move to a rival in the league.
