Sunderland face competition in race to sign Brighton’s Will Buckley

• Gus Poyet’s side have submitted a £2.5m bid for the winger
• West Bromwich Albion are also after his signature

Sunderland are hoping to secure the Brighton and Hove Albion winger Will Buckley before the start of the Premier League campaign. they have submitted a bid of around £2.5m to the Championship club but face competition from West Bromwich Albion.

Buckley, who moved to Brighton from Watford for £1m three years ago and was managed by Gus Poyet, now at Sunderland, came off the bench as Albion lost their opening game of the season 1-0 at home to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday. Brighton are willing to let the player leave but want nearer £3m, with West Brom’s interest likely to spark an auction for the 25-year-old.

The new Brighton manager, Sami Hyypia, hopes to return to his former club, Liverpool, to sign their young left-back Jack Robinson on loan. The 20-year-old spent last season at Blackpool, making 33 starts in the second tier, having previously enjoyed time at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
