Spanish coach says Serie A club were decisive once they agreed the Argentina striker at Real Madrid was their real target
Rafael Benítez has admitted he thought Gonzalo Higuaín was going to join Arsenal but he praised his new employers at Napoli for moving decisively to close the £32m deal.
Higuaín, who has joined from Real Madrid, is now in line to make his debut for Napoli as a substitute against Arsenal in the Emirates Cup on Saturday.
"Higuaín was one of our targets but we thought it was difficult because of all the comments about Arsenal," Benítez, the Napoli manager, said.
"But as soon as the chairman agreed that it was a real target for us he went for him and … done. In terms of the negotiation and to do the deal it was quite quick. I'm really pleased because he is a top-class player."
