Newcastle United close to deal for Argentinian striker Facundo Ferreyra

• Forward wants to leave Shakhtar Donetsk
• Loan deal could lead to permanent move

Newcastle United are on the verge of their seventh signing of the summer after agreeing, in principle, a £1.6m loan deal with Shakhtar Donetsk for Facundo Ferreyra.

It is hoped the 6ft 2in Argentinian striker, 23, who has refused to continue playing for Shakhtar because of the political instability in eastern Ukraine, will eventually complete a permanent £6.4m move to Tyneside.

He made only eight appearances last season, scoring six goals, and has apologised for defecting. “First and foremost, I want to apologise to them [the fans], the president of our club, my team-mates and coach,” said the Ferreyra.

“I hope what is happening in Donetsk will soon end. And we, the players, will do everything possible to give our fans more reasons for joy. My family was very worried about me.” and persuaded me not to go to Ukraine. They thought it was very dangerous.”

Alan Pardew would ideally like two further signings before the transfer window closes – another striker and a defender. The Newcastle manager will also attempt to offload Hatem Ben Arfa but that may be easier said than done.
