Mesut Özil’s lacklustre performances for Arsenal have been drawing flak in England but the harshest criticism has come from his home country of Germany where Bild marked him down as the worst player on the pitch during the humiliating defeat by Borussia Dortmund.

In the German newspaper’s system of reverse ratings 1 marks a world-class performance and 6 means a player “didn’t earn his money”.

Özil was duly rated a 6 although it might have been thought he was fortunate to get a mark at all, so anonymous was he on the pitch that the reviewer might have missed him.

The rest of the side did not escape unscathed with Laurent Koscielny, Hector Bellerin, Alexis Sánchez, Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere all getting a mark of 5.

Top marks went to the home side’s Ciro Immobile, Kevin Grosskreutz and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as they put on a dazzling display in Borussia’s 2-0 win.

According to Bild, the World Cup winning Özil was successful in only 17% of the tackles he made and touched the ball just 31 times in what was described as a “weak performance”. Not much of a return on his £42.5m fee.
