Mandaric and Wednesday rewarded with promotion, says Redknapp

• Wednesday chairman endured 'a difficult year'
• Biggest crowd sees club return to Championship

After overseeing Sheffield Wednesday's promotion to the Championship, Milan Mandaric received a text from Harry Redknapp, with whom he had been cleared of tax evasion charges. The Tottenham Hotspur manager said that Mandaric had got his reward for his ordeal and now he hoped for the same in the form of Champions League football with Spurs.

"This has been a very difficult year for me," said the Sheffield Wednesday chairman after the biggest crowd outside the Premier League – 38,082 – had seen their team return to the Championship. "I came very close to selling this club. My family was very hurt by the trial and my wife is still suffering because of it.

"I thought I might wait until the end of the season, clear the debt from the club and then move on. But what comes around goes around. I always hoped I would get my reward and this is it."

Shortly after the not guilty verdict at Southwark crown court, the Wednesday chairman sacked Gary Megson after winning the Sheffield derby. His successor, Dave Jones, said there had been no message from Megson and he does not expect one. The relationship between the two is icy.

Megson was the 15th manager with whom Mandaric has parted company, although having invested £20m in the club, he said Jones would have the resources to compete as Sheffield Wednesday attempt to emulate Norwich City and Southampton in going straight from League One to the Premier League. "When I find the right man for the club I support them," he said. "When I came here I couldn't have found a nicer human being than Alan Irvine but sacking a manager is like having a piece in a puzzle that doesn't fit.

"I will do everything I can for Dave Jones. The two guys who have managed for me that I feel very strongly for are my buddy Harry and Nigel Pearson at Leicester. I never wanted to sack either of them. I feel the same about Dave Jones."
