Manchester City's Vincent Kompany in frame for early return

• Captain trains ahead of Viktoria Plzen meeting
• Belgian suffered thigh injury in City's 3-1 against Everton

Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany could play sooner than expected following a thigh injury after he trained ahead of Wednesday night's Champions League group game with Viktoria Plzen at the Etihad Stadium.

The captain has not featured since suffering the problem on 5 October during the 3-1 home win over Everton and this was the first time he had trained since being injured.

Kompany had been expected to be given until next week to ensure a full recovery after the injuries that have plagued him over the past three seasons.

The match against Plzen is a dead rubber, as City have already qualified, though Manuel Pellegrini, the manager, may feel it is a little too soon for the Belgian to ease himself back into first-team action.

While the central defender took part in a full warm-up on Tuesday morning, Gaël Clichy walked off the Etihad turf shaking his head, though as this occurred just as the session became closed to the media it was not clear whether he returned.
