The Metropolitan police has arrested two men due to alleged racially aggravated public order offences as part of its investigation into the crowd disturbances during Chelsea's 2-0 home win over West Ham United on Sunday.

The force is also looking into the incidents of coin-throwing by West Ham supporters, in which the Chelsea captain John Terry was struck as he warmed up as a substitute on the touchline during the first half. Further objects were thrown at Frank Lampard, the former West Ham midfielder, as he celebrated his 19th-minute goal with Terry in front of the visitors' enclosure.

The police confirmed that the two men arrested were from the West Ham section at Stamford Bridge. They have been bailed, with return dates set for late March.

The Football Association says it will liaise with the Met, speak to both clubs and consider the relevant match reports before it decides whether to bring any charges against West Ham.

The east London club have promised to work with Chelsea to identify the supporters involved in throwing the objects, with a view to banning them from attending matches.
