Improved after the break to appear comfortable in elite company. Was instructed by Roy Hodgson to rove further forward than his central midfield partner, Steven Gerrard, yet was also on hand to mop up near his defence. The clock showed 7.02 before Osman got his first touch though this led to England's first chance: a one-two with Danny Welbeck on the edge of Sweden's area that ended with a shot that did not concern Andreas Isaksson. Within five minutes of the second half the Evertonian produced his best moment so far with a swivel near Isaksson's goal that won a corner, and was even smarter later with a darting run-and-collect from Gerrard's quick free-kick. If Hodgson had followed the custom of offering truncated game-time Osman might never have been seen again on this stage. Instead, he got the full match.

After a welcome to the international game that consisted of being dumped on his backside, the starlet presented an argument for being England's man of the match in a bright, attacking display that featured deft touches, surging runs and smart passes: it was his ball – after drifting inside from the right win into a central position – to Ashley Young that led to Welbeck's equaliser. This came during a 45 minutes in which he took battering from Martin Olsson, who was constantly sniping at his heels with the Blackburn Rovers man fortunate not to be booked. Sterling was slid into by the home left-back to give up possession at the start of the move that finished with Sweden's opener but he then illustrated mental strength to reply with a later burst from halfway towards the area that opened up the defence: his pass to Welbeck began a sequence in which Tom Cleverley should have equalised on 25 minutes. There was also a dipping cross that was unlucky not to find a team-mate and, after seeing the back of Olsson who was replaced at half-time, Sterling continued to ask for the ball with defenders at close quarters as he switched to the left.

Was taken back to school by Zlatan Ibrahimovic though having to shackle the Swede tests the hardiest of operators at this level and Caulker now has the experience to draw on. He will also not have appreciated having to negotiate a pitch laid just a week ago and which offered the defender's nightmare – a dodgy bounce. Was the first England player to touch the ball with a nerve-settling clearance though moments later he lost Mathias Ranegie though later produced a confidence-boosting header. After this jittery, unconvincing start Caulker was in dreamland on 38 minutes with the strike from Gerrard's free-kick from close range. Before and after this he was guilty of allowing Ibrahimovic too much space in dangerous areas. After he lost the striker in front of Joe Hart, Caulker recovered to block the initial shot but when he returned to his feet Ibrahimovic had slammed home a 36th international goal. Later, he was embarrassed by a clumsy touch near halfway that allowed Ibrahimovic to swarm over him: from the ensuing throw-in and attack Ranegie should have scored. After the break he was again left trailing by Ibrahimovic as the forward swept along the right.

Entered with Ryan Shawcross and, though dismayed to see Ibrahimovic almost instantly score, moved forward before letting fly a shot from 20 yards that rebounded off Jonas Olsson.

Will be disappointed that Ibrahimovic mugged him with a push that allowed the striker to race away before he equalised for Sweden, though this was a night when the Paris St-Germain man was unplayable. He could do nothing about the home side's supreme overhead volleyed finish from 35 yards on the diagonal.
Verdict Did himself no favours

Entered just after Ibrahimovic completed his hat-trick. At least the Crystal Palace man got a taste of the big time with England as he continues to deliberate on his international future. Unlucky not to win a late free-kick on near area.
