St Johnstone are still seeking their first win of the season after their Tayside derby with Dundee United ended goalless at McDiarmid Park. Both sides created goalscoring chances in an even first 45 minutes that saw Saints' on-loan Aberdeen winger Peter Pawlett and Stuart Armstrong denied by their opposing goalkeepers.
The second half was poor by comparison and it was no surprise that the stalemate continued right through to the full-time whistle. The result leaves the home side without a win in their last 14 competitive outings.
Johnny Russell, for whom the Tannadice side rebuffed a bid from Huddersfield Town on Friday, was largely anonymous throughout a derby that was crying out for the kind of inspiration he can supply.
Ross County and Kilmarnock settled for a point each in an entertaining goalless draw at Victoria Park.
The result stretched County's unbeaten run of league matches to 39 with another solid display against a battling Killie team.
There was little in the way of clear-cut chances throughout the 90 minutes with both defences on top and a draw was probably a fair result.
County's best chance of the game fell to Marc Fitzpatrick in the first half but his goalbound effort was cleared off the line by the Killie defender James Fowler.
The visitors should have taken the lead after the break when Rory McKenzie was through on goal but the County goalkeeper Michael Fraser blocked with his feet.
At the other end a Liam Kelly shot from just inside the 18-yard box was blocked by Scott Boyd after Rory McKeown set up the chance following a good run down the left.
Aberdeen's scoring troubles continued as they were held to a goalless home draw by St Mirren.
The Dons have now failed to score in four of their opening five matches in the league. The home side enjoyed the better of the chances and went closest to finding the net when substitute Cameron Smith headed onto the crossbar after 72 minutes.
Fresh from selling inspirational winger David Templeton to Rangers, Hearts entertain Dundee at Tynecastle and Inverness travel to play Motherwell at Fir Park on Sunday. In the Third Division, Rangers host Elgin.
