Aaron Ramsey shines for Arsenal against Manchester United

Sir Alex Ferguson watched Arsenal blow the Premier League title race wide open with a 1-0 victory against his Manchester United team at the Emirates Stadium and cited a refereeing injustice among his post-match regrets, going so far as to claim that "we're not going to get the decisions in these big games, I'm afraid".

The United manager was astonished not to be awarded an 88th-minute penalty for what looked to be a foul by Gaël Clichy on the substitute Michael Owen. Arsenal had earlier been denied a penalty of their own for a handball by the United captain, Nemanja Vidic, which even Ferguson admitted should have been given, yet he has long been unconcerned about accusations of him being one-eyed.

In his criticisms of the officials Ferguson has increased the pressure on the team that will take charge of Chelsea's visit to Old Trafford on Sunday, in what looks increasingly like a title decider. Chelsea beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at home on Saturday, with the help of two fortunate decisions, to close to within three points of United.

Ferguson was furious with the officiating in his team's 2-1 league defeat at Chelsea on 1 March and was unhappy with key decisions in both the league fixtures between the teams last season, which Chelsea won, notably when Didier Drogba was in an offside position when he scored what proved the decisive goal at Old Trafford. Chelsea might point out that they were wronged in the Champions League quarter-final first leg at Stamford Bridge, when Ramires was denied a late penalty.

"It gives Chelsea a major chance now," Ferguson said, after Aaron Ramsey's 56th‑minute goal condemned United to defeat here. "They got great decisions for them [on Saturday] and they seem to get these decisions at the moment.

"They got one to win the league last season at Old Trafford. So that's a worry. You go into a game worrying about these things. But in terms of ability, a game at Old Trafford ... the league at stake ... our supporters will be ready for it and so will my players."

Ferguson has only just returned to the dug‑out after serving a five-match touchline ban for his comments about the referee Martin Atkinson after the Stamford Bridge league game and his latest remarks are sure to go down badly at the Football Association.

Arsène Wenger, the Arsenal manager, conceded that "you can give a penalty" for Clichy's challenge on Owen. "It must have been a penalty," Ferguson said, ruefully. "I think the first one was definitely a flick of the hand from Vida but it was very difficult to see that one. I never saw it and nor did the linesman or the referee. But I think we all got a clear view of the second one – it was a clear penalty kick. We are not going to get decisions like that in a major game. It's too big a game and we don't seem to get these decisions."

Robin van Persie, who might have converted Theo Walcott's 33rd‑minute cross but for Vidic flicking the ball away with his hand, said the incident represented "a clear penalty and, in my opinion, a straight red card".

"It balances out in that respect," Ferguson said. "It was a flick of the hand from Vida but it was difficult to see that. Van Persie was the only one who saw that; he was the only one who complained. The one at the end Clichy immediately knew. He threw his hands up in horror. Owen was definitely brought down."

Owen said, in a tweet: "Not seen tv replay but don't need to as I know mine was a pen. Heard people saying Arsenal should of had one too so can't complain too much. That was a kick in the teeth. We were not happy with our performance but it is important to put today behind us now and focus on things we can affect in the future. Still in a great position so time for one final push."

Ferguson was disappointed that his team had started to play only after they had fallen behind to Ramsey's goal buthe sounded a note of optimism and defiance. United entertain Schalke on Wednesday in the Champions League semi-final second leg, 2-0 in front from the first leg.

"We're in as good a position as you could ever wish for at the start of the season – semi-final of the European Cup, second leg, two-goal lead and we go into [Sunday's] game equal goal difference and it's a home game," he said. "I'll make some changes on Wednesday without question ... bring Scholes back in, Berbatov, Michael Owen, fresh players ... also probably keep my experienced players at the back.

"We deserved a point here. Bear in mind, I don't think Edwin van der Sar had to make a save. Arsenal play a lot of nice football but they never looked like scoring. They got a goal from their only shot on target so it was a bit disappointing."

Wenger lamented how his team could beat United yet drop points against lesser opposition at home. "It makes it more frustrating," he said. "But I prefer to be more frustrated than to lose the game today.

"We had a good performance with everything in it – discipline, fighting spirit and our usual passing game. The team maybe lacks a bit of maturity under pressure and it has also had to deal with some big disappointments. We were really unlucky this season until now. Let's hope we have a bit more luck in the final three weeks. I am very happy for Ramsey. When you think that his injury happened 14 months ago. Now he looks back to his best."

For heaven's sake, play Yossi Benayoun if Torres is going to play! Am i the only one who thinks he knows Torres and his timing better than our Chelsea squad yet? Just cause hes played with him in the past. He needs his confidence back! Aside from that, typical of Ferguson to have an excuse ready if they lose on Sunday... the referee did it.

i think he has already forgotten about the penalty which should have been given to everton, which would have earned the blues a draw. If not for that call, we would be only one point behind manchester rather than three.
SAF....Mind games.....Whats new?
Red nose Ferguson should learn to be quiet. No other team in the EPL gets decisions like Man Utd (penalties, more added minutes, etc). He talks about the Drogba "offside" goal but forgets that Machaeda had a hand-ball-goal for Man Utd as well in the same game. He doesn't mention the ghost penalty against Liverpool in the FA cup, and the number of times Utd dogged away with a red card mostly for Vidic's poor defending against West Ham, Everton, Bolton and Arsenal. I guess Man Utd has blown the title away, and Chelsea will beat them and retain their title...
+4
what about ur two "ghost goal" in a match??
+3
Hans, nowhere in that statement did Macetchu mention that Chelsea don't get dodgy decisions (FOR and AGAINST).

Which is why he points it out... last season chelsea won both games due to poor refereeing decisions. You could argue in the second game the influence wasn't that great, as macheda scored with his arms, but the first was undeniably given to chelsea by the officials, and if it hadn't, the title had been man utd's. In the previous game again decisions went chelsea's way when they shouldn't have, granting the three points, so don't pretend utd are favoured, especially after your "goals" against the spurs

We counting up number of bad calls helping teams win games? Whatever happened to the beauty of football, and the fact that the winning team DESERVED to win as a result of them playing better football? :/
+1
@Ohmz18 what do you mean by "better football"?

And can you also give us detailed explanation of this "better football vs Manchester United" definition. Are you from Africa? I guess I have never heard such words before. You mean possession? Number of connors? Or maybe foul stats? Please... Please... Don't make people laugh. If you have turned TV one time out of 4 in last 4 matches against our team you would definitely realize that such thing like "better football" vs Manchester United involving your team doesn't exist yet and can be chowed only by rams like you.
Stats has nothing to do with better play of both of these teams, rather they show who is going to counter attack more, who is going to risk being opened most of the time, who is being more "active" involving shots on a target and lots more. And about real play of these teams... they differ a lot, but understanding and approach to the game is quite the same. Play is different because personal and squad differs as you haven't realized yet. And also I haven't seen one shirt from those group of people saying anything about "...better play vs Manchester United...".
I'm not one to lose my cool usually, but when the time calls for it.

You ignorant tard. Are you assuming that all people from Africa (A continent mind you) are stupid? It's amazing how one person can suffocate the room with such ignorance.

Well if I wasn't mistaken, the essence of football was to attack, defend, and have good pass and movement. That was what I learnt from football in ENGLAND and ANTIGUA. Don't know where Antigua is? Look it up you ignorant f**k.

You beat Chelsea one time in EIGHT years at Stamford bridge, and that's when we were playing 4-4-2, a formation not suited for Chelsea. Now you're meaning to tell me all those other times where we've beaten you fair and square at the Bridge, was mainly out of pure luck?

You by far are the most ignorant, f*****g idiotic person on FootyTube, and it's fans like YOU!! Who make everyone hate your team and their fans. So please, I never said stats constituted to a team playing better football, because Arsenal are the complete contrary to that. By better football i mean more effective. So next time; before you decide to rebut my comment, read between the lines you tunnel minded f**k!

@Ohmz18 Thanks for your hard work!
I laughed hard))) You obviously made my day!!!

You kid base your assumptions on results by not watching how team really performs on the field. Kids like you cannot analyze a game and just chews a lot before thinking as all rams do. Before making some other posts towards me you need to grow up and at least watch full game live using a TV Screen and not faxing s**t to the toilet machine at the same time.
Hope you'll get better!

Cheers,
me and your mom.
You continue to sound retarded. I'm dumbfounded. It's clear you have no proper rebuttals to my valid points because you seem to focus on trying to demean me rather than focusing on the point I'm trying to make.
Annnnywayyys! Seeing your "Mom" comment, I'm clearly way too mature to be arguing with the likes of you.
I'll dismiss myself. Have fun with you and whatever hand you get off with. We'll let the football players do the talking.Grow up though, it might help you with your arguments.
Peace.
Keep The Blue Flag Flying High!
LOL heres my analysis of united
opposing team attacks, van der sar some how saves the shot on goal because hes a freak, kicks the ball to valencia, nani or giggs, the ball gets crossed in for chicarito.

did you see the chelsea game against tottenham? did you see how chelsea had the ball in the opposing half for the majority of the match? did you see how they passed tottenham to death? maybe you should turn on YOUR t.v screen and watch football
Tunnel vision Matt, only sees what he wants to see.
Suck it up Slur Alex like most manager do. Man U are still coming first, what is there to moan about? Its pathetic!
whatever...if the ref didn't make any mistake that night, Arsenal still would win, at least 2-1. If the first call for penalty for Arsenal was given, Arsenal would've led 1-0 on 33rd min. (if the penalty was scored...) and vidic would've been red carded. Then, the goal by Ramsey is no doubt stayed, so it should be 2-0 on the 56th min. Then, on the 90+mins, a penalty call for Owen and it should've been 2-1 now (if the penalty was scored...). So, i would say, nothing would've changed. Arsenal deserved the win.
u can touch people but u can't STEP ON people legs dumbass

I have to admit, the call was very close, for lampard's on the line goal, it was one or 2 cm off, but the reason most our complaining was the linesman was way out, and not directly side ways, but whatever, we deserved it, the 2nd offside was very close, but we got our clock, after losing a lot of non penalty calls, including that game, but goal technology will be needed soon i explained it a few times, if you add it in, no controversy, less pressure to call the call if you missed it or can't see it, in big games like the world cup, that one was in(even though I was cheering for Germany) and I think that makes people mad, he did score, and it should have counted, this one was very close, and even though I was cheering for Chelsea I didn't mind them counting it in, when it's that close, in Hockey they use video review and alot of big rare goals or calls or made, that make the game change with a goal or not, they need it soon, they have enough camera's and slow motion, and angles, but whatever GO CHELSEA! Beat UNITED!!!!!!
There is no way in heaven, hell, earth or in any other dimension that Owen's fall was a clear penalty. You're allowed to TOUCH people, ffs!

And honestly, manu complaining about refereeing decisions just makes me laugh. Just because you don't get every single call you want doesn't mean that they are all going against you. Stop complaining and play the game. Anyways, the Chelsea games is at old trafford; if you're losing there will be at least 5 minutes of extra time.
+7
how many min of extra time there were in the match arsenal/ liverpool?? at what minute did u score???
+8
Yea, the fact that people keep bringing up the extra-time thing just shows how biased they are. I concede I'm guilty of some bias myself, but I've seen 5 minutes or more given when man utd were winning when I really didn't see why it should be more than 3, so the whole fergie-time thing is bullshit. But everyone wants to stick with their opinion. If once the amount of extra time given could possibly be in favour of man utd, then it's a conspiracy favouring them.. Just as if SAF complains about a referee it's what he always does, when no one notices when he accepts poor decisions, and if they do they forget as quickly as possible
+2
Wow... the Liverpool equalizer at Arsenal helped Manu WAY more than it helped Liverpool... I have no idea why you even brought that up.
