Group E Shakhtar Donetsk v Chelsea

Shakhtar came back from a 1-0 half-time deficit to beat Illichivets Mariupol 2-1 at home on Friday to extend their 100% domestic record, and their victory would have been more emphatic but for the form of Rustam Khudzhamov in the Illichivets goal. Ilsinho and Taras Stepanenko scored but Willian got the plaudits as Shakhtar extended their lead to 12 points after 12 games.

Group G Barcelona v Celtic

Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick as Barcelona won 5-4 at Deportivo La Coruña on Saturday despite Javier Mascherano's red card early in the second half. Messi, who had also scored for Argentina in Chile on Tuesday, has got 11 league goals this season, after eight games. Barcelona's other performances of note came from Jordi Alba, who scored at both ends, and Cesc Fábregas, who created three of the goals. "The game was a bit crazy," said the coach, Tito Vilanova.

Group H Manchester United v Braga

Braga needed extra time to dispose of second division Leixões at home in the third round of the Portuguese cup on Friday. The favourites dominated possession but, in a strangely lethargic performance, were frustrated for nearly 100 minutes before the former Newcastle United midfielder Hugo Viana broke the deadlock, with the substitutes Rúben Micael and Eder adding further goals.

Wednesday 7.45pm

Group B Arsenal v Schalke

Schalke won 2-1 at the reigning Bundesliga champions, Borussia Dortmund, on Saturday in a match marred by crowd trouble. Goals from Ibrahim Afellay and Marco Höger opened a 2-0 lead and, although Robert Lewandowski's header brought the home side back into the contest, the winning margin should if anything have been greater, as Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Joël Matip and Afellay missed excellent chances.

Group D Ajax v Manchester City

Ajax led 2-0 and 3-1 – with 10 minutes to play – but could do no better than draw 3-3 at Heracles, with Luís Pedro claiming the equaliser in stoppage time. With matches against City and Feyenoord to come this week Ryan Babel started on the bench, but he came on in the second half and had a goal wrongly disallowed for offside with the score at 3-2.
