Roy Hodgson said his methods were beginning to pay off after Liverpool secured a first away win since April at Bolton. However, the manager will meet the club's principal owner, John W Henry of New England Sports Ventures, this week and tell him that major rebuilding is required.

Maxi Rodríguez's 86th‑minute goal at the Reebok Stadium lifted Liverpool out of the relegation zone and secured Hodgson's first away win in the league since Fulham, his former club, beat Portsmouth on the first day of last season. The victory lifted Liverpool to 12th in the table but despite recording back-to-back league wins for the first time, Hodgson said his work at the club was just beginning.

"I have always believed we are working the right way," he said. "I've been as devastated as anyone else by our recent results but I've never stopped believing that our work would pay dividends. It's going to be a longer job. It's a rebuilding job and there is still a lot of work to do but it's nice to see a bit of light at the end of the tunnel. It will be nice to work in a slightly less frenetic atmosphere."

Henry will return to Merseyside from the US for meetings before the visit of Chelsea to Anfield on Sunday. Plans for the transfer window will be discussed.

Hodgson said: "We have contact with each other on an almost daily basis because he is very interested and committed and anxious to learn more about the club and what can be done and what needs to be done and how the club can move forward, which is music to all our ears. He will be holding a lot of meetings this week and he wants to spend some time with me on how I see the situation and things panning out in the future. It will be a good week in that respect and I suppose I am just delighted that we are doing it on the back of a victory rather than a defeat because that tends to drag everyone's mood down."

Two league wins have alleviated the pressure on Hodgson. "We are in a world of euphoria or tragedy," he said. "You are either euphoric because you have a victory or tragic because you have a defeat. You try to steer an even keel through those situations but the truth is you can't. You can't stop yourself being too optimistic when you are winning and you cannot stop yourself being a bit depressed and negative when you are losing. That is the nature of the business."

Joe Cole will tomorrow have a scan on a hamstring strain that he suffered in Liverpool's win.
