Chris Foy, whose refereeing of Sunday's FA Cup tie between Manchester City and Manchester United drew criticism from Roberto Mancini, has received the backing of his employers by being appointed to take charge of Newcastle United's Premier League home match against Queens Park Rangers on Sunday.

Mancini, the City manager, was angry with Foy's decision to dismiss Vincent Kompany for a challenge on Nani in the 12th minute of the third-round tie at the Etihad Stadium. City have appealed against the decision, with Mancini expressing his confidence that the red card will be overturned.

Foy also came under fire from Sir Alex Ferguson, who berated the official at the end of the match for denying United what appeared to be a penalty in the second half, when Antonio Valencia was brought down.

Keith Hackett, the former head of Professional Game Match Officials Limited, felt that it was important referees were held accountable for their performances and he would occasionally drop them from the match-list in the wake of a poor display. However, his successor, Mike Riley, has adopted a different approach and at the same time demonstrated his support for Foy.

Rooney should have been sent off. That tackle wasn't better or worse, it was a completely different way of going into the tackle.
