Newcastle's Papiss Cissé risks Fifa suspension as Senegal get tough
• Newcastle striker may be banned for game against Swansea
• Cissé failed to travel to Niger for friendly due to back injury

Senegal are threatening to invoke a Fifa ruling which could see Papiss Cissé suspended for Newcastle United's home game with Swansea City on Saturday.

The Newcastle striker failed to travel to Niger for Senegal's friendly in Niamey on Wednesday after injuring his back during Sunday's 1-0 defeat against West Ham United at St James' Park.

Alan Pardew, Newcastle's manager, is adamant that the club informed the Senegal football federation of the problem and then dispatched specific details of Cissé's medical condition to Dakar along with copies of scans, but they have now been informed they were never received.

Accordingly, the Africans are talking about instigating Fifa's "five-day rule" under which nations can suspend a player for five days in the event of his not showing up ahead of an international fixture without good reason. If Senegal decide to take such action the 27-year-old would sit out the Swansea game but Newcastle have asked the English Football Association to intervene and are optimistic that a solution can be negotiated and the dispute defused.

"We have a bit of an issue going on at the moment with the Senegal federation," said Pardew. "We feel we have covered all the bases to give them the information, but they seem not to have received it, so we are in discussions with Senegal and the FA about his availability for Saturday.

"We gave a report and an email straight after the game that at half-time, Papiss was feeling his back and we took him off the pitch. We also sent reports of the injury, or the doctor did. We didn't, as far as I'm aware, get too much information back, and now it seems that Senegal are upset that he didn't appear for them.

"Somewhere along the line, there has been something lost in translation, so we are trying to sort that out and hopefully it will be clear for Papiss to play on Saturday and clear for him to continue for Senegal going forward, because I don't think anyone wants bad feeling."

With Fabricio Coloccini suspended, Jonás Gutiérrez sidelined by a knee injury, Yohan Cabaye struggling to recover from a stomach muscle injury and Shola Ameobi not due to return from Miami – where he made his debut for Nigeria, coming on as a substitute in a 3-1 win against Venezuala – until Friday, Pardew could do without complications surrounding Cissé.
