Tim Krul is set to spend at least five weeks on the sidelines at Newcastle United recovering from an ankle injury sustained during the closing stages of the team's Europa League win at Metalist Kharkiv on Thursday night.

The Holland goalkeeper had a scan on Friday and is booked to see a specialist on Monday who will determine whether surgery is required.

If, as hoped, an operation can be avoided, Krul still seems certain to miss several key Premier League games as Alan Pardew's side strive to climb away from the relegation zone.

Krul will also have to sit out the two legs of the Europa League round-of-16 tie against the Russian side, Anzhi Makhachkala.
