Joe Hart He will have cursed not being sharp enough to deny Zverotic his deflected goal, and being left exposed by the equaliser, but there was a smart save from Bequiraj on the plus side. 6/10

Phil Jones This was an awkward occasion to debut in a position he has played so rarely, and both Vukcevic and Jovetic exposed the youngster's defensive positioning. The gallops forward were more encouraging. 5/10

Gary Cahill The centre-half mustered a fine early interception to stifle Vucinic, though his evening became more awkward as Montenegro's confidence grew. The centre-half was a threat from set pieces, but is still finding his way at this level. 6/10

John Terry Unable to stamp his authority on the contest when the home side's fluid attacking line found their rhythm and might have closed Zverotic down quicker in first-half stoppage time. 5/10

Ashley Cole There were some fine combinations with Young, the full-back scuttling forward in the slippery conditions, though he was caught out at times and England felt uncharacteristically vulnerable down their left. 6/10

Scott Parker As busy and industrious as ever, the legs and energy to complement Barry's calm distribution at his side. England increasingly needed his bite as the hosts revived. 7/10

Gareth Barry The Manchester City midfielder was tidy enough in awkward conditions, keeping his distribution simple and largely accurate. He also supplied astute defensive cover when required. 7/10

Theo Walcott The familiar blend of the scintillating and the sloppy. His start was breathtaking, with Bozovic powerless to contain him, only for the winger's play to lull. His delivery also veered from the perfect to the erratic. 6/10

Wayne Rooney The architect of England's opening two goals, with Montenegro incapable of denying him either the ball or space in the pocket behind Bent, only to mar his display by kicking out at Zudovic to earn a dismissal. 6/10

Ashley Young Could hardly miss with his 11th-minute header to maintain his prolific recent form at this level, with that a fifth international goal already. If fit, the winger could illuminate the finals. 8/10

Darren Bent Peripheral for long periods, but predatory in converting Young's unselfish delivery for the second goal. His opportunism remains an asset, and he is a constant threat in the six-yard box. 7/10
