If you were building a team of the tournament so far, who would make it into your first XI? You could have Robin van Persie and Karim Benzema up top, with Thomas Müller providing support from his floating position. Toni Kroos and Andrea Pirlo could spread the ball from midfield with Yohan Cabaye shielding a defence of Daley Blind, Mats Hummels, Rafael Márquez and Daryl Janmaat. With a team that attack-minded, you would need a decent goalkeeper: step forward Guillermo Ochoa.
Ochoa kept a clean sheet in Mexico's opening match, their 1-0 defeat of Cameroon last Friday, but he didn't face a shot on target until the 90th minute. Things were not so simple against Brazil, who tested him on seven occasions. These were not run-of-the-mill, straight-down-the-middle daisycutters; Brazil pummelled Ochoa's goal, making him stretch one way and then the other to repel headers, volleys and a general bombardment of traffic towards his net.
The Brazil striker Fred said Ochoa had performed "four miracles", which might have been stretching things a little, but the man himself was no less excited: "It was the game of my life." The internet agreed:
Ochoa in motion
Ochoa as protection
Ochoa as Time cover star
Ochoa as Goro (one for the geeks)
Ochoa as Superman
Ochoa as The Thing
Ochoa as Gandalf
Ochoa as a Mexican stereotype
Ochoa's Wikipedia vandalism
Ochoa as a wall
Ochoa as another wall
Ochoa as Neo
Ochoa as hipsters' choice
Apparently he put in an even better performance for AC Ajaccio against Paris Saint-Germain last season. Of course he did.
How impressed were you and who would make your team of the World Cup so far?
