Manchester City are suffering an anxious wait after learning that Sergio Agüero sustained a groin injury on international duty with Argentina.

The forward, who moved to City in the summer in a £35m transfer from Atlético Madrid, pulled up in training and has been ruled out of Argentina's home World Cup qualifier against Bolivia in Mendoza on Friday and is a major doubt for Tuesday's trip to Barranquilla to play Colombia.

Agüero injured his groin during City's 4-0 defeat of Blackburn Rovers early last month and was out of action for a fortnight, missing the Premier League victory over Aston Villa. He was also forced to sit out Argentina's first two qualifiers, the 4-1 victory over Chile and the 1-0 defeat by Venezuela, and was keen to make his international return against Bolivia.

With Carlos Tevez facing further disciplinary action for returning to Argentina without City's permission, the club could be down to two fit strikers – Edin Dzeko and Mario Balotelli – for the home Premier League match against Newcastle United on Saturday week and the crucial away Champions League game against Napoli on 22 November.
