Carlos Tevez was charged on Wednesday with driving while disqualified and faces a possible prison sentence if convicted in the run-up to Manchester City's appearance in the FA Cup semi-finals.

Tevez reported to Middlewich police station in Cheshire and has also been charged with driving without insurance, with the case to be heard at Macclesfield magistrates court on 3 April. That is five days before the Manchester derby at Old Trafford, with the semi-final against United or Chelsea the following Sunday.

The striker had been arrested last week after allegedly being caught behind the wheel of a white Porsche Cayenne on the A538 on the outskirts of Macclesfield, seven weeks after being banned from driving for six months.

Tevez, who scored a hat-trick in Saturday's 5-0 defeat of Barnsley in the FA Cup, had previously pleaded guilty to two counts of failing to supply information over incidents in which his car was clocked speeding. The court was told that he did not acknowledge the notices because he did not understand the word "constabulary".

If found guilty of driving while disqualified, the maximum sentence is six months, but the courts can also consider community service or anti-social behaviour orders, as well as fines up to £5,000.
