Manchester City have appointed Tom Glick, the Derby County chief executive, to the newly created role of chief commercial and operating officer.

Glick will leave Derby in August to begin the job. John McBeath, City's acting chief executive, said: "Since September 2008 [and Sheikh Mansour's purchase] Manchester City has been a club in constant development and evolution. It is important we recognise that we must now further evolve in order that we can continue to create and capture potential opportunities. To do that we need the very best people and the board believes that Tom is the ideal person for this role."

Glick said: "This is an exciting time for all connected with City, and I am looking forward to helping to drive the club's off-field development. I have been impressed by the ambitions and plans set out by the chairman and board – I shall use my experiences here in England and in North America to help City build on its recent successes and achieve new milestones in Manchester and around the globe."

While City confirmed the new post is to realise commercial opportunities, Glick's appointment reflects a rapid rise in English football since his appointment at Derby four years ago. In 2010 he became a member of the Football League board and he is also one of eight members of the Football Association's Professional Game Board, and has a total of 23 years experience in sports management, with his previous positions including two years as the chief marketing officer with the NBA's New Jersey Nets.
