Manchester City hope to complete the €4.1m (£3.5m) signing of the former Bayern Munich defender Martín Demichelis from Atlético Madrid once the Spanish club have secured a replacement for the Argentina defender.
Manuel Pellegrini has turned to the 32-year-old, with whom he worked at Málaga and River Plate, only a month after Demichelis joined Atlético on a free transfer.
Atlético are prepared to cash in immediately and a figure is believed to have been agreed in principle, although the deal is unlikely to be agreed until the Spaniards sign another defender.
City's defence has been disrupted by injuries to Vincent Kompany, Matija Nastasic and Micah Richards since the start of the season. Kompany is targeting a return from a groin problem for the Manchester derby on 22 September.
