Liverpool have agreed a deal with Valencia to sign Aly Cissokho on a season-long loan, with the French left-back due on Merseyside to complete the transfer next week.

The manager, Brendan Rodgers, has been looking to increase competition on José Enrique all summer and Liverpool also made offers for Lorenzo Melgarejo at Benfica and Guilherme Siqueira of Granada.

Rodgers cooled on Melgarejo after a fee had been agreed and had expected to complete the €5m (£4.3m) signing of Siqueira this week, only for Granada to inflate their asking price late in negotiations.

Cissokho was always under consideration, however, and Liverpool stepped up their interest in the 25-year-old France international once the Siqueira deal hit complications. Sunderland have also been linked with the former Lyon defender but Liverpool have moved in to agree an initial loan deal with Cissokho's club.

Liverpool are also interested in the £30m-rated Willian at Anzhi Makhachkala but have yet to make a formal bid for the coveted Brazilian midfielder.
