Kevin Mirallas signals his arrival at Everton and Leyton Orient's exit

A 100% start to the Premier League season, new signings and now a contemptuous dismissal of lower-league opposition in the League Cup; David Moyes must feel he moved to a different club in the summer after all. But this is Everton – should he need the reality check – and their transformation continued as Kevin Mirallas marked his full debut with two goals in a rout of Leyton Orient.

The competition provides Moyes with the easiest route to his first trophy as Everton manager, not that the Goodison Park club has ever found a way through before, and his selection reflected a determination to correct that unwanted statistic this season. Though Marouane Fellaini, Nikica Jelavic and others were rested, the Everton manager picked a strong side against League One opposition and the job was as good as completed with a quarter of the tie gone. Mirallas, soon to be joined at Everton by the 17-year-old Kilmarnock winger Matthew Kennedy, made a convincing start as Moyes' side made light work of the League One visitors. Mirallas was at the heart of all four first- half goals in a dream full debut following his £5.3m arrival from Olympiacos, but was not the only new signing to impress. Steven Naismith, on his first start at Goodison since his controversial exit from Rangers, also toyed with a weak Orient defence and the eye for the angled pass into the area from both summer signings augurs well for Moyes.

The pair combined expertly for the first goal of the Belgium international's Everton career on 16 minutes. Naismith had already sent Magaye Gueye through for a clear shot on goal, saved well by the former Everton apprentice Jamie Jones, when his perfectly-weighted pass released Mirallas on the right of the Orient area. The striker stroked a calm finish into the far corner.

Six minutes later Mirallas attempted to back-heel a Leighton Baines delivery across the penalty area and proved it was his night by miscuing the ball straight to Leon Osman, who poked the ball beyond Jones in the absence of a genuine challenge. Mirallas grabbed his second of the night when he cut inside from the left and sent Gueye's pass through the legs of Nathan Clarke and in off the deflated Orient goalkeeper.

Russell Slade's side were offering nothing in attack and little resistance in defence and it was no surprise when Victor Anichebe added a fourth before half-time. Again Mirallas was involved, setting up his fellow striker for a low 20-yard finish that flew under Jones far too easily. Orient finally discovered some resilience in the second period but the fifth came when Seamus Coleman, revelling in space from right-back, chipped across the penalty area for Gueye to volley home.
