Borussia Dortmund's coach, Jürgen Klopp, says that Tuesday night will be historic, no matter what the outcome. Either Dortmund will reach the European Cup final for only the second time, the first time for their manager and his squad, or they will be on the wrong end of the greatest semi-final comeback ever. Yet Klopp insisted that what his team have achieved already must be considered a success and claimed that they would be "brave".
The German club have much to lose in a stadium that has made a virtue of European fightbacks but Klopp, asked if there was a risk of Dortmund freezing, replied with a single word, delivered without hesitation: "No". Asked, "Are you certain?" he responded: "Yes". He then likened the situation to last year's German Cup final against Bayern Munich, noting: "My team was pretty cool then".
He said: " The only way to reach a dream is to do it bravely. It's not a problem to lose the game because it could happen of course, what matters is how you do it; what you invest in the game. So, my players cannot fail.
"Real Madrid believe they can come back against us and, if they believe so, they will act accordingly. At Dortmund we want to thrill our fans with our team. I think we've all seen how we can play. We are ready for Real Madrid to try everything they can and our feeling is not that we are already in the final. We feel the first-leg result was much better than expected but we know we will have to fight tomorrow and be at our best.
"We will not do [one] thing or the other," Klopp continued when asked if his team planned to attack or protect their lead. "It would be silly for us to have a clear idea of what we're going to do. Madrid can pose us trouble, we know that. But we also have great attacking potential. We proved that in the first leg. We'll see whether we need it but it is clear we have the necessary strength.
"The important thing is balance in football, between defence and attack. When we attack, we all attack, when we defend, we all defend. I don't have any problem with that and that plan is applicable to all matches. We know we are not a normal semi-finalist and will behave accordingly. It is great to reach the semi-final already and we will act with humility."
