David Moyes has said he will not let Johnny Heitinga leave Everton in the January transfer window after the defender scored the winning goal in the 2-1 FA Cup victory at Bolton Wanderers. "I can't let him go," Moyes said. "We are too short in central defence."
Heitinga replaced Nikica Jelavic with 10 minutes remaining and the score at 1-1 – after Marvin Sordell, for Bolton, and Steven Pienaar had scored in the first half – and the substitution was met with boos from Everton fans. "The fans saw a striker coming off for a centre-half, and that's why they were booing," the Everton defender Phil Jagielka said.
Reading cantered to a 4-0 victory over Sheffield United to strengthen manager Brian McDermott's conviction that a good Cup run can help his team stay in the Premier League. Two goals from Noel Hunt and one apiece from Mikele Leigertwood and Garath McCleary ensured a comfortable home victory.
