David Luiz trained with Chelsea's first-team squad at Cobham on Tuesday as the Brazilian bids to prove his fitness ahead of Wednesday's final Champions League group game against Steaua Bucharest.

The defender has not featured for Chelsea since the Premier League defeat at Newcastle United on 2 November, the 26-year-old having initially suffered a bruised patella during the international break while he was away with Luiz Felipe Scolari's Brazilian squad last month.

The problem has required constant treatment since but, having rejoined the squad on Monday, he will seek a return against the Romanians.

Ashley Cole is also expected to start for the London club – he, too, has not played for Chelsea since the loss at St James' Park – as he seeks to regain his place at left-back from César Azpilicueta.

Chelsea qualified for the knockout phase despite losing to Basel last month, but need a point against Steaua to finish top of the group.
