Coleen Rooney and her footballer husband, Wayne Rooney, are expecting their second child, it was announced on Wednesday.

Revealing the news on Twitter, Coleen Rooney, 26, said the couple were "thrilled" and that the baby was due in May.

"A few people guessed, so news is out ha!!" she tweeted. "Me Wayne and Kai are thrilled that we are expecting a new addition to our family around May time x."

A second message to her 840,000 followers said: "Its still only early but bursting with excitement! Also wanted the news to come from us, before anyone else! ??."

In an interview last year, Coleen indicated that she was keen on a large family of "maybe three or four children," adding that "I'd be happy to be a full-time mum".

The Rooneys already have a son, Kai Wayne, who was born in November 2009.

Rooney, the Manchester United and England striker, has previously spoken about how becoming a father was the "proudest moment" of his life, and had given him a bigger kick than his football career. It was reported at the time of Kai's birth that he had cried as the baby was placed into his arms.

Despite earning about £12.9m last year and Coleen reportedly worth £8m in 2009, the baby was born in an NHS hospital room, not the private clinic next door.

The couple were married in a lavish ceremony in 2008, both aged 22, after a childhood romance while both 16 at secondary school in Croxteth, Liverpool.

While Wayne has carved out a career as a leading national striker, Coleen has built a career in television and clothes modelling for brands such as Asda. She also signed a book deal with Harper Collins.

The couple were inundated by well-wishers on Twitter.
