Bayern Munich: 4-2-3-1

Manuel Neuer 6 A virtual bystander for long periods. Could only help Drogba's equaliser into the net, but scored in the penalty shootout.

Philipp Lahm 7 Proof that the best things sometimes do come in small packages. Swiftly showed Chelsea how much he enjoys slick one-twos with Robben.

Jérôme Boateng 6 Surely stronger at centre-half than full-back, the fdefender conceded a dangerous free-kick wasted by Mata with a foul on Cahill. Overpowered by Drogba at the equaliser.

Anatoliy Tymoshchuk 5 A natural defensive midfielder, the Ukraine international deputised out of position for the suspended Holger Badstuber.

Diego Contento 6 Young and inexperienced but the left-back's excellent cross very nearly created a volleyed goal for Müller. Did not let his side down.

Bastian Schweinsteiger 8 Seized considerable control of central midfield. Perfectly timed second-half challenge on Cole. Missed penalty in the shootout.

Toni Kroos 6 Dragged an early shot wide but generally his job was to help Schweinsteiger ensure Bayern dominated midfield possession.

Arjen Robben 9 Elusively excellent, frequently bewitched Bayern fans while bewildering Roberto Di Matteo's defence before Cech saved his penalty.

Thomas Müller 8 Headed the opening goal from Ribéry's cross. Earlier his gorgeous little flick created a splendid chance ballooned over the bar by Gomez.

Franck Ribéry 8 Had the ball in the net in second half only to see his effort rightly disallowed for offside. Gomez failed to capitalise on some of his best work.

Mario Gomez 5 Unusually wasteful and strangely off the pace. Decision to delay a first-half shot with the goal at his mercy permitted Chelsea to clear.

Substitutes

Daniel van Buyten (for Müller 86) Former Manchester City centre-half replaced Müller as Bayern, forlornly, aimed to hold their lead. 6 Ivica Olic (for Ribéry 97) Replaced the limping Ribéry in lively fashion. 6

Subs not used Butt, Petersen, Rafinha, Usami, Pranjic.

Chelsea: 4-2-3-1

Petr Cech 6 Flapped at Müller's header but saved Robben's penalty in extra time then denied Olic and Schweinsteiger to set up Drogba's golden moment.

José Bosingwa 5 Had his hands full coping with Ribéry and, bar one splendid second-half cross, offered little going forward. Largely retained his composure.

David Luiz 7 Defended smoothly with intelligence and rare concentration. Made vital, impeccably timed, early second-half clearance from Ribéry.

Gary Cahill 6 Like David Luiz, still convalescent after injury and found his hamstrings fully stretched by Bayern's attacking movement.

Ashley Cole 9 Struggled to get across the halfway line but important second-half blocks highlighted his defensive brilliance. Converted his penalty well.

Mikel John Obi 6 Sitting just in front of the defence reminded everyone he is not exactly Claude Makélélé but did quite a few things right on a difficult night.

Frank Lampard 7 Fine first-half through ball to Drogba threatened to open up Bayern. Frequently up against it but worked diligently and cool from 12 yards.

Salomon Kalou 7 In the absence of the suspended Ramires Chelsea's most athletic midfield runner. Worked very hard to funnel Ribéry into cul-de-sacs.

Juan Mata 5 Took Chelsea's first corner of game, from which Drogba levelled matters. Missed his penalty, the Blues' first, but it worked out in the end.

Ryan Bertrand 8 The 22-year-old left-back made his European debut in a left-wing role and looked good going forward. Justified his manager's faith.

Didier Drogba 7 Imperious late equaliser, concedes penalty with a forward's tackle on Ribéry, then wins the trophy from 12 yards – all in perhaps his last Blues game.

Substitutes

Florent Malouda (for Bertrand, 73) Fragile hamstring meant he began on the bench 5 Fernando Torres■ (for Kalou, 84) Sent on for Kalou and gamely pursued his side's dream. 6

Subs not used Turnbull, Ferreira, Essien, Romeu, Sturridge
