Bradford City

Matt Duke 9

Excellent as Bradford's display was, at times Duke's shot-stopping was all that stood between them and an emphatic defeat

Stephen Darby 7

In the early stages he seemed to struggle against Agbonlahor's pace but, like his team, he swiftly grew into the game

Rory McArdle 7

Not great at marking Benteke at set pieces – the Villa striker had three free headers – but turned out to be better at the other end

Carl McHugh 8

Surprisingly dominant for such a slight player – McHugh is 5ft 11in and very slender. Excellent header for Bradford's third

Curtis Good 6

Decent defensively and rarely inclined to attack. Largely comfortable when Weimann was on the right

Zavon Hines 8

A bright display of running and trickery, though he sometimes shot when a pass or cross would have been a better option

Gary Jones 9

Brilliant, ultra-industrious but classy performance in central midfield. Delivery from flanks led to all three goals

Nathan Doyle 7

Formed a good partnership with Jones in midfield and did some important work in defence at start of second half

Will Atkinson 7

A more prosaic display than Hines's but some good touches on the break and skipped past Clark in a fine 84th-minute run

Nahki Wells 8

Endless running, and high confidence evident in twisting run and third-minute shot. Took his goal with admirable coolness

James Hanson 7

Height and work rate gave Villa's defenders a different threat to Wells's. Hit the bar and had another fine header cleared off the line.

Aston Villa

Shay Given 7

Cannot be faulted for Bradford's goals – though he was close to the second – and largely controlled his area with authority

Matthew Lowton 7

Was perhaps the only Villa player who could be said to have had a comfortable evening, against the slower Atkinson

Ciaran Clark 6

Hit one splendid long-range pass to Benteke in the 33rd minute. Missed an excellent chance just after half-time

Nathan Baker 6

Too often he was forced to hit long, hopeful passes towards attackers. One memorable, emphatic tackle on Hines

Joe Bennett 5

Struggled to cope with the bubbly Hines and the winger's replacement, Turgott, as Bradford focused on his left flank

Gabriel Agbonlahor 6

Not always reliable with the ball but made a good chance for Weimann and saw a decent shot well saved in the first half

Fabian Delph 6

Too often played too deep, especially in first half, though showed class with fine pass for Benteke. Booked in second half

Barry Bannan 7

Impressive set-piece delivery could have led to several goals, and looked Villa's most creative player when he got forward

Charles N'Zogbia 7

Revelled in the freedom Villa's attacking formation afforded him, though his shooting was too often wayward

Christian Benteke 5

Missed several headed chances, plus his weak clearance led to opening goal and poor marking to third. Did get an assist

Andreas Weimann 6

Must get some credit for scoring the goal, hurting himself in the process, but did not offer much threat from the right flank.
