Manchester United's Ashley Young accused of looking for penalties

Sir Alex Ferguson has agreed that Ashley Young is attracting a reputation for going down too easily after "a dramatic fall" to win the penalty for Manchester United's opening goal in the 4-0 defeat of Aston Villa at Old Trafford.

The win restored United's five‑point lead over Manchester City in the title race but it was Young's clash with Ciaran Clark on seven minutes that again made the forward the focus of controversy.

Young went down after he appeared to move his leg to Clark's. Wayne Rooney scored the penalty just as he did when Young fell under the touch of Queens Park Rangers' Shaun Derry in the 2-0 win last Sunday that caused the QPR midfielder to be sent off.

Asked if Young was getting a reputation for falling too easily, Ferguson said: "Yes. In the last week or two, yeah. I've never seen that in him, it's not a habitual thing in him. He was brought down, he just made the most of it. I think he played for the penalty. If the player decides to put his foot in and doesn't stay on his feet and read the situation, he has fallen into the situation. But he's definitely taken him. It was a dramatic fall. He overdid the fall but it's a penalty, there's no doubt about that and I don't think they can have any complaint because he has taken him."

Alex McLeish, the Aston Villa manager, said: "I didn't think it was a penalty. He had his foot planted firmly on the ground and tried to pull it away. I certainly felt it was a very soft decision. It's so difficult for refs because it happens that fast. We had a young player at Liverpool last week who stepped inside Agger. It should have been a penalty but he got booked. It looked as if he was a diver. It's a split-second decision for referees and a difficult job."

Ferguson also offered rare criticism of Rooney. "He was careless. Wayne has to play on the edge of a game, when it is really close and competitive. When the game gets to that casual bit, he is worse than the rest of them. He gets really casual about it. It is better when he is on the edge, then he is a marvellous player."

Ashley young was an embarrassment but people should stop taking it all out on Manchester United. I've posted the link below where Gary Neville discusses it. People from all teams dive. I don't know how barcelona fans in particular can complain. Busquetes is the worst diver ever, and your whole team make such a fuss about such a small issue. The whole team surrounds the ref over such a small foul.

I'm all in support for the rules being changed so that players can be punished after a game. I know many players do this to get the ref's attention, and very often if you don't do it, the ref doesn't call a foul. It's the same for soft headbutts where people fall down like they've been hit by a car or something. Players including Ashley Young need to stop exaggerating, because winning doesn't give fans any sense of satisfaction.

You´re absolutely right

Its not about one club dives more than another, its about the fact that this is going to be standard in football, there is always the wish for fairplay from the UEFA, FIFA, and each other organisation and then we benefit so many wrong decisions there are made like penelties, no real goals like Spurs-Chelsea or anything else....that´s unacceptable

and yes youre fully right if a player doesnt go to the ground even it was a clear intense foul, there is probably no penalty given

I think FIFA and UEFA should take a few pages out of the monotheists holy books and punish players severely. For instance, if a player dives he should receive the death penalty. Or, if a player handles the ball, he should lose the hand he used to handle it. I am sure that will put an end to cheating!

SAF is a f*****g cunt. He overdid the contact and fell dramatically but it wasn't simulation? I'm pretty sure thats its definition. And what replay was he watching? All it takes is a man moving to United for him to become a disgrace to football

I heard Ashley Young is going to be Tom Daley's new diving partner in the upcoming London Olympics.

Contact is contact. How you go down is up to the player. Its different to fake contact altogether.
Yeah, and in this case the player made a complete air head out of himself.

You'd think once is enough.

Actually how one goes down is very important. It can further affect the decision of the referee, further leading him to judge based off of cloudy information.
Haha, that movie poster is hilarious. Love the captions as well.
P.S. I have this movie and find it pretty entertaining.
and they say Suarez dives
