David Silva adds to Manchester City injury problems for trip to Stoke

• Silva suffers thigh injury on World Cup duty with Spain
• Midfielder returns to Manchester City to be assessed

David Silva has suffered a slight thigh injury while on World Cup duty with Spain that could rule him out of Manchester City's trip to Stoke City on Saturday.

While City do not believe the problem is serious, the midfielder joins Matija Nastasic, Micah Richards, Vincent Kompany and Martín Demichelis as a player who has been injured this season. Silva has returned to the club to be assessed by medical staff.

The Spanish football federation reported that Silva had a light muscle problem that was revealed by a scan. "For precaution, and to avoid complications with this injury, Silva left the training camp," a statement said.

Nastasic injured his ankle during the Asia Trophy and missed the opening two Premier League matches of the season while Richards pulled a hamstring and has not played so far. Kompany's groin injury suffered against Newcastle in City's first game could prevent the defender playing until October. Demichelis, signed in part as cover for Kompany the day before the transfer window closed, could miss up to six weeks owing to strained knee ligaments.
