Ever the controversial figure, Roy Keane has weighed in on the furore surrounding the recent WC2010 Qualfication Playoff between France and Ireland.
Providing an almost refreshing opinion on the matter, Roy is quick to shoot down an Irish public wrapped up in a victim complex, and also comes down pretty hard on a reporter that dares leave his phone on midway through the interview ;)
Rather than focus on the split-second decision of the French captain, Keane views the full 210 minutes of both legs and draws upon the inability of the Irish squad to shut out the game or defend effectively, as well as the previous good fortune of the Republic in the group stages.
As an ex-professional speaking on behalf of another, Keane defends Henry’s striking instincts and how often this happens in everyday football. He disregards any knee-jerk reactions bringing the integrity of football into question and takes a swipes at the FAI, who he seems to brand as hypocritical.
Battling the mainstream, sensationalist opinion, Roy is in fighting mood, focussing on how Ireland lost rather than how the French won.
Although you could say that Roy Keane’s reaction stems from an embittered feeling following the Saipan Incident in the 2002 World Cup. After a face-off with then ROI manager, Mick McCarthy, the FAI sent captain Keane home, which was almost inevitable given his constant criticisms of the management structure as well as personal conflict with McCarthy.

He Said What!
Strangely, in slow motion replay, the ball seemed to hang in the air for even longer.
