Owen No 7
Matt (Southampton) 3 months ago
I have to admit when Sir Fergie signed Michael Owen I presumed it was simply to be seen to be signing a 'big' name and maybe to shift a few more shirts.

I thought he would play nothing more than a cameo role in the upcoming season, a few 'super sub' appearances for Rooney and Berbatov.

Apparently this is not the case at all as SAF has handed Owen the coveted no 7 shirt, is there a more famous shirt in the world than a United no 7? Defending his choice Fergie said "I am not concerned with what supporters think. The important thing is to give it to someone who is confident to carry it and he is the natural one to get it. "

"His contribution in overall play is definitely suited to us. He is very clever in the last third and knows when to run and when to hold.

"That, linked with the experience he gives in that position, will be good for us.

"This is not the acid test but ]given his ability and understanding of play around the last third, I think he will be getting goals. "

I am often wrong, very wrong and it seems that trend has continued. Will Owen prove to be the bargain of the century another brilliant move by ol' Fergie or will it go down in history as another Eric Djemba-Djemba

Well numbers don't make players. Owen is playing well at the moment united best player imo. But in all fairness this is still pre season. But owen was never a scrub player. When he was fit he was always considered as one of the best strikers on the world and if we are looking at it from a historical perspective owen is the second best player on the squad behind giggs. So it's only natural to me that he get the 7

I guess that's the problem, as you say when Owen was fit he was one of the best strikers around. It has just been so long since we have seen a fit Owen that's it's hard to judge what level he will come back to.

There is also the fact a lot of his game was based around his pace which may have been affected by his age and injuries.

I am not sure how much weight we should place on a players history as the saying goes 'you are only as good as your last game'.

Quite looking forward to seeing how this pans out

That what they say about ronaldo(oh fenomeno) all the time and he just proves them wrong everytime. And I believe owen is one of those players ! He just a;ways knows how to put the bll in the net he older now and when your older I think you need to play on a good team to still be effective and man utd is that team. I predict 17+ goal this season if fergie lets him start

Probably the best bit of business this summer. Owen has already scored a few in pre season and I think Berbatov's quality will help him a lot. He had terrible service at newcastle despite he injuries and he's simply a great finisher/poacher. When you think of the millions being bandied around for average players these days, Owen on a free is simply great business. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets 15+ goals this season.... If he can keep himself fit

To be honest I havn't seen that many Owen 7 shirts sold here in Japan!
Big9al (Newcastle United) 1 month ago
Hmm it also happen in indonesia...
Ragarsha (Liverpool) 3 months ago
Owen didn't lose his touch I guess, I personally think for a striker to hit form depends on 10 players behind him it is not that he is going to play the match by himself he has to be assisted or supported, that was not available at Newcastle so he lost his form. He deserves no 7 but there were no strong contenders for the shirt
Yamsy (Liverpool) 3 months ago
Maybe Valencia could have taken the number though...
Ragarsha (Liverpool) 3 months ago
I guess the no is worn by an experienced player would look more appropriate
ManUK (Manchester United) 3 months ago
It would but then again he gave it to Ronnie and 18 year old
Kimaway17 (Liverpool) 3 months ago
I think Valencia should have got it and Owen gets 15 or 32

Hahahaha very funny. I guess you saw Owen's brochure also
Ant (Liverpool) 3 months ago
I'm completely split in two over Owen. I'd love to see him regain form and score some amazing goals because he strikes me as being a decent guy and has a long Liverpool history. However, if he starts banging in a hat trick every game for United I'll have to use the voodoo doll again and break his legs, as much as it pains me to do it
Rayrulesohye (Liverpool) 3 months ago
I'm shocked at liverpool not signing him a team that is crying out for another striker and giving him the no. 7 is a bit extreeme but that says that fergies gonna' sign a real no. 7 are maybe a current squad member will deserve the number next season
Alen (Liverpool) 3 months ago
We should have have gave him a shot at it, we did for Keane and he prolly would have turned out better if he had more time to adjust
Santillanavila (Real Madrid) 3 months ago
Looks like Owen is proving he can wear the #7. Hopefully he overachieves this year and regains status as a great striker. I think Owen will get injured once with a minor injury but other than that I think he will do great
Thomas1978 (Liverpool) 3 months ago
I do think Owen will do really well at Man Utd. He was in a very poor Newcastle team with virtually no supply from midfield and he still did reasonably well.

His record at Pool and real suggest he is a real potent goal scorer. What Man Utd fans can expect from Owen is a Van Nistelrooy type of player, a real poacher round the area. People are expecting him to do something great especially after losing Ronaldo.

I do think he will be a good bet for top scorer if fully fit through out the season.

It will be curious to see if Owen follows in the pattern of the two previous wearers who, when they needed a point to prove(Beckham's red card against Argentina and Ronaldo's winking), stepped up and had a stellar season. I am in no way suggesting 42 goals but a half to two thirds of that would be lovely
Adamaus (Manchester United) 3 months ago
Imo all the number 7 does is show how much admiration fergie has for him and has had for him since he was a teenager! Owen is obviously highly thought of by fergie and so he should be.

I'm not going to lie I was an surprised as anyone that he was given number 7, I was expecting it to remain free for a season or two until the right player came across. Saying that I'm not disappointed that he was given no. 7 or that we signed him, I think he will be an amazing signing and aslong as he's fit well score plenty of goals for united.

Hopefully fergie will show once again why he is one the greatest managers of all time imo.
Dali (Manchester United) 3 months ago
That is immediately what I thought when I saw him on the pitch with the number 7. We'll see. But I genuinely hope that Owen puts forth his FULL effort this season. We need our players to support us, not bring more problems.

On that note: When is Hargreaves coming back?
Yamsy (Liverpool) 3 months ago
Hagreaves still has some months to go...
Adamaus (Manchester United) 3 months ago
He was suppose to be back september but he had to have another surgery so I think its now a couple of months away. I feel sorry for him, it must to hard being out for that long!
Yamsy (Liverpool) 3 months ago
Rosicky too! But he only has 2 more weeks...
Keano16 (Manchester United) 3 months ago
The Number 7 is a shirt for great players and Owen has already proved for other teams and England that he is a great player which is why he got the 7 shirt ahead of valencia who is yet to prove himself. I'm sure owen will prove himself at united, come on!
Dhanasil (Manchester United) 2 months ago
Owen is already proved his class for liverpool and england and he deserves d no. 7 jersey
Dhanasil (Manchester United) 2 months ago
I'd love to see him regain form and score some amazing goals because he strikes me as being a decent guy and has a long Liverpool history
Ant (Liverpool) 2 months ago
Did you just copy and paste that directly from my post just under the comic above? How weird
Franboy (PSG) 2 months ago
7, 10, 14 bla bla blaaaa
The number does not make the player. If owen plays well and mark many goals with the 7 better.
Numbers can be superstition for some but the game does not change anything.
The real question to ask is? Is that owen is a good transfer for mutd and not its number
