Portugal V Spain, Jun 27

I have to admit Portugal was the better side last night but with some fortune spain get through! If they play against Geramny for the final, it will be their toughest match of the euro!

By the way Gaypornaldo say goodbye for the ballon d'or....

Danman (Barcelona) 2 years ago
0 shots on target. What fortune? Germany will be tougher though if they make it, but Spain still have another gear they can go to

Great referee, btw. Seems the game could have easily collapsed into Iberian chaos

Great game from portugal. Where most teams resort to defence against spain, they actually attacked them and were a more pleasant team to watch through out the game. Spain is a great team, but I'm sorry, too many passes between Busquets/Pique and Alonso/Ramos, that kind of possession means nothing and today proved it.

Luck plays a very big role in Penalty Kicks (Alves' shot went out after hitting the bar and Cesc in, Ronaldo didn't even shoot, etc), but hey the rules are same for everyone. I do feel sorry for people who are claiming that it is somehow ronaldo's fault that his name was fifth on the sheet. Remember, there is a coach who decides such things in a team, not the star player. I'm confident most of those who claim Ronaldo wanted to take fifth, have never played in a competitive pro/semi-pro football team, else you would know the coach's role and responsibility.

Lastly, Ronaldo did carry portugal so far on his back and won the league with Madrid, lost in Semi-Finals of Euro primarily because his team lack a strong Striker/Center Forward. He is a far better candidate for Ballon D'or, there are no guidelines that specify that he had to win either champions league or Euro otherwise Messi gets it automatically, so calm your horses on that hype
Barcachick (Barcelona) 2 years ago
Ronaldo did not carry the team along.... It was all collective efforts.... Remind you if not for the goal scored by varela maybe they would not have the opportunity to play in the semi final.... After he missed so many goals against denmark.... And besides messi did not play in the euros so there was not competition between both.... Winning the best footballer of the year comes to individual achievement and believe without any doubt messi is way way ahead of him.... Breaking so many records that have been held for some long a time.... If you say he did not win the leauge or champions leauge then he should not be given the best footballer then no one deserves to win it because in each leauge in the world there were winners and each winning team had a star player.... So dude it comes that to individual achievements again and messi is way way way far ahead of him...

Good points, but Ronaldo did not carry his team on his own. He was very good as usual, but they had people like Coentrao, Meireles, Pepe, Nani etc all putting in a good shift. I thought they were a strong team in this tournament, very unfortunate that they lost
[account-removed] 2 years ago
In my opinion real madrid did very well to unsettle barcelona in the first half but you could tell that in the second half madrid was exhausted.
Disappointed ronaldo put his ego ahead of his team and tried to go for glory. And for that reason madrid are out of the euros. Congrats barcelona good luck against bayern munich or juventus in the final

Ramos casillas xabi alonso & arbeloa signed for chelsea or what
Ilikeairports (Barcelona) 2 years ago
Shame Figo was benched, he was gonna' play for both teams
Abelredevil (Manchester United) 2 years ago
Why didn't Ronaldo take a penality? Is it because Casillas knows where he shoots?
NZLfootballer (Manchester United) 2 years ago
Almost same dp as me mate lol
RouslanH (Chelsea) 2 years ago
That might be a reason. Also, Ronaldo misses penalties when they matter...
Ira2409 (Juventus) 2 years ago
He was supposed to take the last one. He never got the chance
Octopuss (Arsenal) 2 years ago
He's number 5....    Pepe did score his penalty thou
Ilikeairports (Barcelona) 2 years ago
The way he looked on camera just before Fàbregas took his, it looked to me like he was preparing to take the fifth. Taking the penalty that decides whether you win/have to continue or stay in it/go out (the fifth by the second team always does if it has to be taken) is the most difficult thing on earth and something for supposed "leaders" to do. Which is one reason so many stories have to do with famous players screwing up on important penalties.... From Roberto Baggio to John Terry to Bastian Schweinsteiger. So Ronaldo didn't pussy out, quite the opposite
Jon1979 (Real Madrid) 2 years ago
Many have made penalties, and missed em.... Robben made a penalty against Casillas which was rather surprising to me!

Thing about this is, even if Ronaldo had his chance, it would not have been the game winning penalty mate; doesn't seem like people realize this...
Approix (Barcelona) 2 years ago
Spain in final.... Very good game by both teams. Hard luck [C.] are. And Co.... Lets see who will meet with Spain in final.... Go Spain Go....
RouslanH (Chelsea) 2 years ago
At some points I thought the commentator was speaking english.... Anyways, it is unlucky that portugal lost, but at the same time it would be unlucky for spain to lose as well
AceAhmed29 (Arsenal) 2 years ago
First half, portugal were the better team, they made the spaniards nervous and put them off their game, has anyone noticed that spain/barcelona get very nervous when they are under pressure and being attacked, it doesn't last but definetly puts them off their stride.
The second half was a stalemate, and the extra time spain through the introduction of pedro found some extra energy and attacked, overall a good game but you would love to see some goals in any semi final
Superfanof (Manchester United) 2 years ago
Wow, portugal played very well in this game, they desrved to go to d finals just as much as spain does
Mad93 (Chelsea) 2 years ago
Cristiano Ronaldo: From Hero of 3 goals to Zero for a regrettable decision not to take the early f****n penalty that could help portugal through
PeterzeGooner (Arsenal) 2 years ago
What if he took it and missed?
ColonelBX (Chelsea) 2 years ago
He was asked to take the last one, unfortunately before that they missed two so he couldn't take it
Ilikeairports (Barcelona) 2 years ago
I won't post as long again as below, but taking the fifth is the hardest thing on earth, especially when you're in the second team to take them. Ronaldo is the last person I'd blame for this
Barcachick (Barcelona) 2 years ago
He wanted to be a hero and prove that he deserves to win the balloon d or.... But fabregas took the front papers from him...
Shuriken (Benfica Lisbon) 2 years ago
@Barcachick Please go away, you are the worst stereotype of a Barça fan ever...
Jon1979 (Real Madrid) 2 years ago
Yo imo taking penalties is pretty much always the same difficulty.... Just about as hard as Fabregas's penalty was!
Juno (AC Milan) 2 years ago
What did Ronaldo mutter in the last few second of the clip?
Pastor399 (AC Milan) 2 years ago
I was going to take the next penalty...

Overrated footytube buttons: "Lucky" and "Awesome"
Underrated footytube buttons: "Great" and "Average"

So Spain went through on penalties, but if I look at the pie chart I'd think Portugal were attacking them non-stop, hitting the post three times in 90 minutes and incorrectly having a goal disallowed for offside. The match told me a different story: Portugal were the first team since Italy to come out of hiding and showed that by pressing for the ball up front and keeping a solid defence, Spain's mechanisms can be sabotaged. Hence, much respect.

But what they didn't find an answer to is Spain's defence which has been great since match day 2 (and hasn't conceded since then) and is still ignored like this doesn't even matter in the case of Spain. At the same time, Spain themselves didn't find a way to unsettle Portugal defensively, except for that one early chance. So again much respect to Portugal, and don't get me wrong, they were doing a good job and could have gone up 1-0 with a bit of luck.

That was that for 90 minutes. It was simply a pretty balanced match between two good and smart teams who (unfortunately for us) neutralized each other's attack. In extra time, things shifted, and Spain became the better side. Portugal just managed to hold on to the goalless draw and I think they deserved it based on the previous 90 minutes.

Then came penalties, which are just what they are.

So a narrowly deserved win for the veeery slightly better side in my opinion, a game that could have gone either way and not that bad by the standards of goalless draws (although Italy had a better one the other night). The votes puzzle me. Can people just not get over the fact that it's Spain?
Theatreofdream (Manchester United) 2 years ago
Wrong, I often voted teams with average or great, indeed they were my most favorite rating....

Portugal did deserve to get an awesome vote.... Just look at their squad, and now look at spains, so much difference.... Yet they still gave a wonderful fight throughout the tournament....

If I should correct your statement, it would be this:
Overrated: spain
Underrated: portugal

Spainrule (Valencia) 2 years ago
I know cos of my username all my comments seem ridiculously biased, but Spain is being hated on because they win.
In Euro 2008 everyone loved Spain, the new exciting team, now people are bored of them and prefer Germany and say Spain are overrated. Seriously? They have the best defence in the tournament other than Italy, only conceding one goal. And they're in the final
Ilikeairports (Barcelona) 2 years ago
@ Theatreofdream: Well, if you look closely at my post it didn't say "buttons overrated/underrated by Theatreofdream"; I too tend to use "average" and "great". I gave Portugal a "great"; couldn't decide with Spain, so didn't vote, but I think "lucky" has little to do with it, which was my main point here besides the idea that a majority of users here seem to love "lucky" and "awesome". Personally, I think Portugal has a decent squad with several Real Madrid players including Ronaldo and solid midfielders and a goalkeeper who I think is underrated. No, it's not Spain's squad, but only Spain has Spain's squad so moot point. Thanks for the correction anyways

@Spainrule: Yeah, I think that's one of the main points. Even if Spain did play slightly less well in this tournament than in the previous two (and I can totally see Germany or Italy beat them), they went to penalties after 0-0 in the last European Cup, they 1-0'd everyone at the World Cup two years ago and took 118 minutes to score on the Dutch - and no one was bickering. There's been this oh-Spain-is-so-boring bandwagon driving around the Euro 2012 discourse and while I totally agree with some criticism, some other criticism has been extremely shallow and biased

Most boring game in Euro 2012
Reventon (Barcelona) 2 years ago
Yeah the england vs italy game has the be the most boring, hell anything with england is boring. Plain and simple
Theatreofdream (Manchester United) 2 years ago
England vs italy the most boring? Hahahaha typical barcelona fan...
Auron777 (Manchester United) 2 years ago
@Theatreofdream  Yup. Anything with england is boring. They're over hype, overrated and overpaid...
Barcachick (Barcelona) 2 years ago
@theatreofdream do watch football games or you just follow what the crowd says.... And whats your problem with Barcelona because we always make you cry when we whoop your team ass every time we play at the champions league finals
Jon1979 (Real Madrid) 2 years ago
Hahahaha these comments made me laugh so hard!

Spain are like rivers, for as Winnie the Pooh said: "Rivers know this: there is no hurry. We shall get there some day"

I'm not sure if your comment is philosophical or puerile.    I like it.
AdnanBosnia (Manchester United) 2 years ago
To me Ronaldo just looks like he's gettig worse as a player. I mean how many shots down the left did he have that were so off target and he has lost his pace. I think Portugal would have won on penalties if he had taken the first and scored, I don't know whether he wanted to be hero or was too scared to take the first penalty. The free Kicks also werent as good as we know he can take it, Ramos one was much better.

Pirlo said his chip was too break England Psychologically well I personally think Ramos wanted to do same to Portugal.

Portugal tried doing the same thing when nani told bruno alves to take the next one and good pen by nani but it backfired 'cause ramos made it worse for alves hahah!...
Ilikeairports (Barcelona) 2 years ago
Yeah, little mind games there. Ramos had a lot of nerve considering the one from Bernabeu not so long ago.

As for Ronaldo, I wouldn't be too harsh on him. His tournament was neither amazing nor amazingly bad. His shots yesterday were nothing to write home about, but he had a high work rate and contributed to the team like everyone else. In my opinion, he had an ok match without being brilliant. Like many players on both sides I would say
Barcachick (Barcelona) 2 years ago
He wanted to be the hero that takes Portugal into the final.... I sincerely think and personally believe he was not playing for his country but rather for the fact that he wanted to prove that he was better than messi and wants to win the best footballer of the year.... When he scores can't you see the expression on his face or the gesture he puts up, like touching his head which means he his intelligent and taking away the effort the other puts to get the ball to him.... I sincerely think he should forget about the rivalry between him and messi or always trying to prove that he is better becomes the more he is doing that the worst he becomes of a player.... That's just my candid opinion....
AdnanBosnia (Manchester United) 2 years ago
Yeah I think so too, only when he was at man utd that one year he won Ballon d'Or I thought he was better than messi but not now. He is very wasteful not just him but hugo almeida too. Even though this year Ronaldo did score 65goals but messi still scored more and assisted more plus scored way less penaltys. I just think messi is more of a team player and a better man and that can be seen on the pitch.

@Ilikeairports I know he wasnt too bad nor that great but this whole tournament I think he's been like that and for a player who is rated as highly as him I think people expect better plus the team he plays with aint even that bad. Messi with Argentina recently has done well but Argentina is filled with amazing strikers and we all know there midfield, defence and keeper aint nowhere near the same in strength as their attack.
Theatreofdream (Manchester United) 2 years ago
Still comparing messi and ronaldo in 2012? Please.... Move forward not backward.... Either ronaldo played for his country or his own self, he was indeed portugal's hero and the reason portugal went to the semifinal.... He did what he's supposed to do: being ronaldo.... You guys can shut your mouth and continue worshipping messi like he's your god or barcelona like he's your heaven. Cheers girls
Barcachick (Barcelona) 2 years ago
@theatreofdream and what do you worship me?
KidRobe (Real Madrid) 2 years ago
@Barcachick "when he scores can't you see the expression on his face or the gesture he puts up, like touching his head which means he his intelligent and taking away the effort the other puts to get the ball to him"

-You got all that from Ronaldo touching his head?
