It's the 21st century, but the gods of Mount Olympus and assorted monsters have walked out of the pages of high school student Percy Jackson's Greek mythology texts and into his life. And they're not happy: Zeus' lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Even more troubling is the sudden disappearance of Percy's mother. As Percy finds himself caught between angry and battling gods, he and his friends embark on a cross-country adventure to catch the true lightning thief, save Percy's mom, and unravel a mystery more powerful than the gods themselves. Just watched this documentary about 5 free-style footballers , from the UK embarking on a trip to meet Maradona in Argentina.Certainly entertaining and worth a watch. Not the greatest documentary out there but its relevant to something we all have passion for.

The Pianist

A film that has a tremendous impact on you. It's the story of a great Polish pianist, who can be considered a celebrity of the 30's in his country. He's of Jewish ancestry and the story envelops the second world war and how he tries to survive it.
Like other great war films, it is packed with sobering emotions, but it never bothers you, it's just an integral part of what Wladyslaw Szpilman, the pianist, must have gone through. Adrien Brody is supremely casted as this kind-hearted artist. He portrayed the feeling of hopelessness, being alone, being hated to perfection, gradually dragging you down his stuggle with him. A must-see.

Un Prophète

Set largely within prison walls, the film details the prison career of Malik el Djebena (Tahar Rahim), a 19-year-old man of North African origin but estranged from the Muslim community. Sentenced to six years for what appears to be violence against police (albeit denied by Malik), he is chosen by Cesar Luciani (Niels Arestrup), feared kingpin of the prisons reigning Corsican gang, to kill a prisoner named Reyeb (Hichem Yacoubi) who had initially offers Malik drugs in exchange for sex. Reyeb is in prison awaiting testifying against the mob. Malik commits the bloody murder, and thanks to Luciani's near-total control of the prisons internal workings - gets off scot-free. This makes him a lieutenant in the prisons Corsican gang, initially entrusted only with menial duties and disparaged as an Arab outsider.

Haunted by visions of a ghostly Reyeb, and determined to get on, the illiterate Malik not only learns to read, but teaches himself Corsican, surreptitiously learning the ins and outs of Luciani's business. Another inmate, Ryad (Adel Bencherif), becomes Malik's friend, later his ally on the outside. When Luciani arranges periods of leave for Malik, entrusting him with various criminal missions, Malik takes the opportunity to do some business of his own, setting up a drugs trade with Ryad's aid. Life gets increasingly dangerous for Malik, both inside and outside prison walls, but he seems partly through Reyeb's benign, unearthly influence - to lead a charmed life. Powers of prophecy are attributed to him after surviving a bizarre car crash an incident presaged in an enigmatic fantasy sequence.

Has anyone seen the Japanese film 'Grave of the Fireflies' (Hotaru no haka) here? I saw it last month, and it broke my heart. It's one of the best animated films I've ever seen, definitely the most touching. The story is about an adolescent Japanese boy, Seita, and his little sister, Setsuko, in the early 1940's.
They live in Kobe, which is under heavy bombardment of the Americans. There is famine and Seita and his sister have to try to survive somehow. Telling anything more would be spoiling the film for anyone who is still planning on seeing it.

If you don't like anime, don't worry, this is barely the same (it's from 1988) as modern day anime. If you do like anime, don't expect bloody scenes or surreal fighting: it's a film that concerns the harsh truth of war and the agonising consequences for civilians

High praise coming from good old' Ebert and you of course , I'm going to check this one out J ! Have you seen Brotherhood of War? It's a Korean film but with different war themes I'm sure. Definitely one to watch though if you haven't, since I know you like war movies
Jeroen (Barcelona) 6 years ago
What a coincidence; I was about to start it, but thought I'd check footytube first. A friend of mine borrowed his external HD to me and told me I had to watch Taegukgi, brotherhood of war ASAP
No point in waiting then, I've got cold ice tea, a very comfy chair and delicious penne ready!

I love John Travolta's appearance as I saw him in is best role for swordfish. It was top class.
He was just too good in Pelham and says "Regina baby you got a job to do, honey."

The story is pretty simple and it started out like any ordinary day; that's likely what New York City subway dispatcher Walter Garber, an employee of questionable character, was thinking when he got up and went to work in the morning. Little did he know that he'd become the confidante and "stand-in" hostage negotiator for a slick criminal mastermind who takes over the Pelham subway train and demands money in exchange for the lives of its passengers. Hearing the names Washington, Travolta, and Scott creates a lot of anticipation, predictable plot twists, shallow characters, and little tension. It's easy to watch with actors of Washington and Travolta's caliber at work....

Well we can call it's genre as Crime and thriller....

Love to see John Travolta's again....

Any one knows his good moves as this one Pelham 123,
And a little oldone Swordfish,

And Face off....
