There is a fantastic article on yahoo giving the 'Top 10 Greatest Sporting Rivalries'. I shall post the link at the end but here is their list in brief:
1) India V Pakistan (Cricket) 2) Martina Navratilova v Chris Evert (Tennis) 3) Boca Juniors V River Plate (Football) 4) Alain Prost v Ayrton Senna (F1) 5) NY Yankees V Boston Red Sox (Baseball) 6) America V Europe (Golf) 7) Nancy Kerrigan v Tonya Harding (Figure Skating) 8) Sebastian Coe v Steve Ovett (Athletics) 9) Muhammad Ali v Joe Frazier (Boxing) 10) Fausto Coppi v Gino Bartali (Cycling)
Note: Although the article title says its a 'Top 10', they do not seem to be ranked and I don't think you can compare them anyway. It should say a 'List of Great Sporting Rivalries', but that just doesn't sound as good now does it?
On the whole I think its a pretty good list, although The Ashes surely deserves a place on it somewhere! Your thoughts anyone? Anything you think theyve missed?
One thing I love about NRL is that more than 8 teams can win it, everyone is equal (read:salary cap), and it's just the team that wants it more that gets it. But there is one derby that rules them all. The two teams that started it all.
Roosters vs Rabbitohs. 2 teams that have had a rivalry for 101 years
The most interesting rivaly i've read about has got to be the Sorkhabi derby in Iranian Pro League. From what i've read there are basically two decent teams in Iran and the majority of the country either supports one of the other (Persepolic FC + Esteghal FC) and twice a year they meet and fill out a 100k+ stadium and fight it out. The whole country goes red or blue and apparently (and that's a big apparently), the reason every game from 2007-2009 was a 1-1 draw was to stop mass violence. One of the many football games around the world i'd love to witness.
Stephen Hendry - Steve Davis (snooker) Phil Taylor - Raymond Van Barneveld (darts) Sea Biscuit - War Admiral (racing) Rocky Balboa - Appollo Creed (boxing )
Agreed. Ali v Frazier used to be a classic encounter.
Marco Pantani - Lens Armstrong (Cycling)

England and Australia in everything we do is named "the *insert sports name* version of the ashes*. But mostly in cricket (snore).
Australia and New Zealand is pretty big aswell, I remember in the commonwealth games Australia and NZ we're in finals for Gold in Netball, and Hockey. Considering we're the two most "western countries" down here
