UEFA Drop Eduardo Suspension
Andy (Rangers) 2 years ago
UEFA have decided to drop Eduardo's two game ban after a successful appeal from Arsenal.

I think if anything, it has shown the power that big name clubs still wield, a media storm fuelled by Arsenal was enough for UEFA to make this momentous decision.

These incidents have happened in the past, focussing on player misconduct after a dive yet had their appeals refused.

Have UEFA sealed a can of worms? Or is their 'U-Turn' so dramatic that it is simply embarassing?

Is that real?

That's embarassing. Whether or not eduardo made an attempt to decieve the referee is beyond arguement I thought. Its really besides the point now, seeing as how UEFA have overturned it. UEFA were trying to decieve us I think, someone should give them a card. They clearly arent ready to take on diving

Very poor decision made by UEFA, why take the correct stance then weeks later a complete u-turn. Even if they reduced the ban to one-match they have still made a statement of intent, but to clean the slate and basically absolve him of any blame is beyond belief

Well so much for this sending a message to other divers.    Dive on ronaldo, dive on

I'm an Arsenal fan and I didn't think there was contact either. However, right after the game Wenger himself said he thought there was some contact.

99% of us football fans saw this game on TV and from the TV camera angle it looked like there was no contact. However Arsenal appealed because they have video evidence that shows there was indeed contact from Boruc's knee. Eduardo claims he lost balance running at full speed, tripped himself and went down. He didn't appeal for a penalty (like 99% of divers do) yet the ref awarded one.

Even if it was a dive which many people still believe, you have to admit this was one of the most convincing dives ever. Eduardo goes does down at the exact moment Boruc gets to him. The timing is almost too perfect to be a dive, but from the TV camera angle all anyone sees is that Boruc pulls his hands away just in time to avoid Eduardo's feet

Just because he's a good diver doesn't make it ok that he dived. You're making a point that because he did it so perfectly timed, that he should be let off? I'm not taking one side or the other but I don't really see your logic there.

Additionally what camera angle would only Arsenal possess?

What I'm trying to say is that the dive was almost too good to be a dive. In other words, he didn't intentionally dive! He was running so fast lost his balance and tripped. The ref awarded a penalty. Only when you watch it in replay could any viewer call it a dive. In real time it looked like a penalty

I find it normal to have eduardo pardon, or he must punish all players (Inzaghi, Ronaldo, ....). The yellow card during the match for simulation --> ok. Suspension by video --> no. Or he must use the video for everything! ! ! Imagine a goal then refuses to exchange the video is the result?
Yamsy (Liverpool) 2 years ago
Oh no.... Horrible decision.... It just means that they still cannot make the big decisions and divers are gonna' continue....
If they wanted to lessen the punishment, why not just turn the ban into 1 game instead of 2?

I've watched this replay a few times and there is indeed contact with Boruc's knee. However, this contact was only made once Eduardo was well on his way down. I agree with the reversal of the match ban. I think it's harsh to single out Eduardo where it may have not been a dive, where in fact he may have lost his balance, when there are clear dives out there that go unpunished every day. Even looked like Rooney took a dive against Slovenia and appealed for the penalty that England were then awarded. Anyway, I agree with the reversal.... But I would agree with the match ban if the ruling was consistent across the board for divers
Zach (Manchester United) 2 years ago
A match ban is a rash decision to start with anyway. If the player would have been caught at the time of the infraction, he would have only received a yellow card. So if Uefa was going to do something after the fact, all I can see as fair is a yellow card for the player and, since it led to a penalty, maybe revoking one of Arsenal's goals. Although that would be very harsh

I'm glad that eduardo won this ridiculous charge. I can't belive that they
Actually thot of doing this. I'm a die hard soccer fan I think that "diving"
Is part of the game. Some of the new rules that are being brought up by fifa
Are ruining the game
Reyhan37 (Arsenal) 2 years ago
I agree and disagree with you. Diving is a part of the game. And I don't mean to sound arrogant that I'm more of a football fan than you, but to the purists it is an unwanted part of the game. It's like injuries. They will always happen to every team but no one wants them to happen. There will unfortunately always be diving, but with proper prevention and punishment it can be minimized. FIFA and UEFA have showed that they do not know how to properly handle this problem
Rayrulesohye (Liverpool) 2 years ago
It was a rediculous charge, If anything the officials should be charged with missing such a blatant dive
Salt (Aston Villa) 2 years ago
The punishment in a game is a yellow card. To give a 2 match suspension to someone after the game is totally bogus. They use video technology to reach the decision. But aren't FIFA totally opposed to video technology being used?
