Can't say that I didn't cheat on this one- I actually found more than 4 players (the list had more than 10)- here are the 5 most recent according to what I found: Alfie Conn (Rangers 1968–1974, Celtic 1977–1979) Maurice Johnston (Celtic 1984–1987, Rangers 1989–1992) Steven Pressley (Rangers 1990–1994, Celtic 2006–2008) Mark Brown (Rangers 1999–2001, Celtic 2007–2010) Kenny Miller (Rangers 2000–2001, Celtic 2006–2007, Rangers 2008–2011)
Not sure on the brown answer, maybe greatscot could clarify that one, maybe he moved between the two clubs, but maybe he never got to play an actual game for one of them, or either, who knows. Great bit of googling sam.... Lol
Perhaps 1970 I know Gerd Muller scored two tricks in the group stages. And I wouldn't be surprised if a Brasilian bagged one in that tournament. England were also strong in that tournament, don't know if they had an attacker to do it though. Did Eusebio play in Mexico, I know he had a game with four in 66 scoring nine in the tourney
Well google aided me a little bit, but apparently Sándor Kocsis scored 7 or so hat tricks for Hungary. And he scored more than one of those in the 1954 world cup in switzerland, so I'll go with that
Correct ManUK.... The 1954 WC in Switzerland is the right answer- a total of EIGHT hat-tricks were scored in that WC, with Koscsis scoring 2 for the high-scoring Hungary team:
Sándor Kocsis 3 goals Hungary 9–0 South Korea First round Erich Probst 3 goals Austria 5–0 Czechoslovakia First round Carlos Borges 3 goals Uruguay 7–0 Scotland First round Sándor Kocsis 4 goals Hungary 8–3 West Germany First round Burhan Sargın 3 goals Turkey 7–0 South Korea First round Max Morlock 3 goals West Germany 7–2 Turkey First round Theodor Wagner 3 goals Austria 7–5 Switzerland Quarter-final Josef Hügi 3 goals Switzerland 5–7 Austria Quarter-final
The tournament also set the record for most goals per match in a tournament at 5. 38 (where were the goalies?) goals per game
I scored over 300 goals in my career in all competitions. I won the U-23 European Footballer of the Year. 3 years later, I won the Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year in the same year. In every World Cup that I played in, my team were always eliminated on penalties (three times). Who am I?
Just thought that I'd write this to acknowledge the efforts of everyone who comes here to post questions and answers. This is easily one of my favourite threads (its as addicting as sporcle) and I come on this every time I'm on footy tube. I do read all the questions but I am stumped on the majority of them.
Barcelona 09 lost a game or two in the group stages after they sealed qualification, forget against who and Inter in 2010 lost to Barcelona away at Camp Nou 1-0 thanks to a Pique goal.
Just a stab in the dark, Liverpool, Milan, United and Ajax
Nope it was 1-0 just Pique. Bojan scored the 2nd one but it was disallowed. I got nightmares about it. 100% positive. We lost the first tie 3-1. In that match Pedro scored
As mentioned, only 4 teams have been able to accomplish this feat twice: Ajax had 7 wins and 2 draws in 1971–72 and 7 wins and 4 draws in 1994–95 Liverpool had 6 wins and 3 draws in 1980–81 and 7 wins and 2 draws in 1983–84 Milan had 5 wins and 4 draws in 1988–89 and 7 wins and 5 draws in 1993–94 Manchester United had 5 wins and 6 draws in 1998–99 and 9 wins and 4 draws in 2007–08
I am a legendary foreign Seria A coach from Eastern Europe whose recognized approach to the game was mainly based on the attacking side, while insisting on fair play and openely struggling against doping in the mid 90's.
Name the only teams to have won the three major UEFA official Cups, namely UEFA Champions League/European Cup, UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, and UEFA Cup/Europa League
The uefa cup/europa league was the former cup winners cup, so man utd must be one, unless you mean someone won the cup winners cup, champions league, and the NOW europa cup, if that's the case, skip united.... Lol We need clarification.... Lol, do you mean they won 3 seperate trophies? As I count the europa league as the old cup winners cup, and therefore the same competition
Your question isn't very clear, if you are looking for who scored the most World Cup goals for The Netherlands in 1 world cup then the answer is 5 goals and that was accomplished 3 different times, Johan Neeskens in 1974, Rob Rensenbrink in 1978, and Wesley Sneijder in 2010. If you want to know who has the most all time World Cup goals for The Netherlands then the answer is Johnny Rep, he scored 7 goals, 4 in 1974 and 3 in 1978
Ya I was talking about career goals, and Rep is correct. You either have a tremendous knowledge of footballing history haha or you are getting a little help from your friends aka the internets. It's all good man, just try and use your knowledge and not use google or wikpedia cheers, if you didn't use that, I apologize and cheers for the footballing knowledge you possess
England's highest finish in the World Cup following their 1966 triumph was when they finished in 4th place at the 1990 World Cup in Italy. They lost to Italy in the third place match 2-1, Italy's goals were scored by Baggio and Schillaci, while England's goal was scored by Platt
Epic it was to say the least, hopefully the English can step it up for the Euro's and we may get to see a repeat of Germany vs England in a meaningful match
